Milwaukee area sees jobless rate edge down in September

The Milwaukee area encompassing Milwaukee, Washington, Ozaukee and Waukesha counties reported 16,200 unemployed last month, down from 15,600 a year earlier. The jobless rate stood at 2.6 percent, below the national 4 percent, with 3,600 job openings in September. Prolonged vacancies persisted in about 50 classifications including sales, clerical, health, accounting, engineering, factory and maintenance.

Joyous Event Dismissal in Birth Control Prescription Case

A Milwaukee judge dismissed a $250000 damage suit filed by Mr. and Mrs. Leo Szczerbiak who alleged a drug store issued cold tablets instead of birth control pills. The judge called the birth of the child a joyous event and found no injury to the mother or precedent for a different ruling.

New Clue Reported in Tate Slayings Probe

Los Angeles police say new physical evidence could point toward the killers in the Sharon Tate murders and four others. Homicide Lt. Robert J. Helder gave little detail but emphasized the lead may help locate suspects. The Aug. 9 killings occurred at Tate’s home shared with director Roman Polanski.

Monroe United Fund mobilizes 150 volunteers Oct 20 24

More than 150 women will canvass Monroe homes starting Monday Oct 20 to raise a record United Fund goal of 30485 dollars under the theme One Gift Work Many Wonders. Mrs. Roger Severson says the drive ends Oct 24 with new agencies Wisconsin Heart Association Cystic Fibrosis Arthritis Foundation and Methodist Social Services joining the effort. Volunteers will wear red feathers and receive tax receipts.

Mental Health Meeting To Be Held Tuesday In Monroe

Assemblyman Joseph Tregoning of Shullsburg will speak at the Green County Association for Mental Health annual meeting at Monroe Community Center at 8 p.m. Tuesday October 21. Officers will be elected and campaign awards presented. Fourteen Green County residents attended the Wisconsin Association for Mental Health Leadership Institute in Madison October 15 and 16. Gov Warren Knowles gave the luncheon keynote on The Challenge of Change. Also present were Orian N. Hutchinson Jr. and other mental health speakers. In sports, Argyle High School guard John Soper suffered a dislocated right shoulder in football at Belleville and was treated at St. Clare Hospital with expected release today.

Monroe High School Chorges directed by Jack Close stage Camelot in the Junior High Auditorium on Oct 29 and Nov 1 with 67 chorus members and an instrumental ensemble of 14. Two Injured In Accident Early Today

Two people were hurt in a county traffic accident at 3 13 a m six miles west of New Glarus on County Trunk 1. The driver Frank L Erickson 25 Blanchardville suffered elbow cuts. A passenger Cheryl Cassidy 19 Blanchardville suffered cuts and bruises. The car rolled over and was a total loss per a Green County deputy.

Mrs. Sam Waelti 72 Dies. Monroe Philanthropist, Club Leader

Marie Elizabeth Wittwer Waelti, 72, of 1620 23rd Ave., Monroe, died Friday in St. Clare Hospital after a stroke. A longtime Farm Bureau and Homemakers leader, she chaired county safety and charitable groups and helped organize Round Grove Homemakers. Survived by husband Samuel, daughter Norma in Olympia, siblings, and four grandchildren. Funeral Monday at St. John’s Church. burial Greenwood Cemetery. Also notes Delbert M. Folgate underwent major surgery yesterday at Freeport Memorial Hospital with good post operative condition.
