Four Firemen Die in Collapse Leaves 14 Children Fatherless

Five Ridgefield volunteer firemen trapped by a collapsing wall perished in a Sunday blaze at Cardinal Lanes in Cliffside Park near the Hudson River. The incident left 14 children under 21 fatherless and injured ten others, with investigations into possible arson under way. Memorial services are set for Wednesday as $8,000 was pledged to survivors by Hudson Dispatch.

Newlyweds Die In Tragic Appleton Crash

The Associated Press reports a young Appleton couple Gary E. Schroeder 19 and Beth Lea 18 died early today when their car lost control and struck a street light post on Appleton's northeast side. The fatalities push Wisconsin's weekend toll to 11 and 1967 highway deaths to 849, with a freshman Milwaukee assemblyman among the victims.

Tax hike in Pennsylvania cigarettes 5 cents per pack

Three Are Injured In County Mishaps

Three people were hospitalized at St. Clare after five Green County weekend accidents. Larry Wilson and his brother were hurt in a Spring Grove Township one car crash on Mt. Hope Road, Wil Meinert also injured. Linda Larson and Sandra Wyssbrod sustained injuries in a Highway 59 collision near Albany. Additional wrecks occurred at McNair Corners, Highway 1181, and on a Monroe town road.

Two Events Set Saturday Hartwig Aleda Schuetz Are Named Monroe West Achievement Winners

Aleda Schuetz of the Clarno Classy Clubbers and Larry Hartwig of the Browntown Busy Beavers were named the Achievement Girl and Boy at Monroe West Area 4H Achievement Night held Saturday at St John’s United Church of Christ. The event honored 4H members across clubs including Browntown Busy Beavers Cadiz Clarno Classy Clubbers Hiawatha Hilltop and Jordan Jolly Workers with awards, speeches, and a community sing led by local leaders and extension staff.

Walter Wheeler 87 Albany Fire Volunteer Dies

Walter Fitz Wheeler 87 of Albany died Sunday after a short illness. a 50 year member of the Albany volunteer fire department he was an honorary member. Born December 16 1879 he married Viola Anderson September 27 1909 in Monroe. Survived by widow two sons Marion and James five grandchildren six great grandchildren and a sister Mrs Nelson Wells. Services set for 2 p m Wednesday at Suarez Funeral Home with calling hours Monday.

Lynn Named Municipal Justice For Monticello

M. E. Peggy Lynn has been appointed Municipal Justice for Monticello to fill the unexpired term of M. R. Zimmerman who resigned as of September 1. The Monticello Village Board announced the decision noting Lynn had previously served in that capacity.

Riot Training Brings Activity To South Wayne

National guardsmen conducted riot control training near South Wayne Wisconsin over the weekend. Exercises at the Saalsaa farm and South Wayne High School included rifle grenades, formations, and transport planning while participants slept on gym floors and prepared for possible riot duty. Food and instruction continued through Sunday with an eight hour session planned for November 4.

Mental Health Unit Will Elect Tuesday

Green County Mental Health Association plans its annual meeting and officer elections at 8 p.m. Tuesday October 17 in Green County Hospital.
