Leo W. Roethe veteran big game hunter and Nasco Industries president will lecture at the Green County Conservation League annual meeting in Turner Hall on Thursday night October 20 at 8 p.m. He will premiere a full color Africa and India hunting film and show slides from his India Shikar plus action photos with notable figures. The event aims to draw a large crowd with expanded seating and welcomes nonmembers with youth and women admission options. Proceeds fund wildlife projects and free trees for farmers.
Ted Abels of the Green County Beef Producers Association urged that tickets remain available for the beef barbecue at the County Fair grounds this Sunday. Calves to be on display tonight near the Commercial and Savings Bank will be sold Sunday, with a round steak dinner from 12 to 1 pm and a cattle sale. A Green County youths horse show and a hind quarter beef prize are on the day’s program. Tickets may be bought from local stores, members, or Abels.
The Board of Education invites teachers and their wives to attend the annual dinner at 7 p.m. on Monday Oct 24 in the Monroe High School M room. Wisconsin Forensic Association presents a one act play Markheim by Robert Brome. Co directed by Peter Martyn and Mrs LaVerne Meyer with Earl Brockm as technical assistant. Superintendent D J Huenink says the luncheon introduces new teachers to the board and helps new members meet teachers.
Moscow announced that all Chinese students must leave the Soviet Union in retaliation for China’s expulsion of Soviet students last September. The government described the move as a reciprocal act and a formal government decision affecting educational exchanges.
The University of Wisconsin budget for 1967-69 totals $420.9 million, a 30 percent rise over the prior figure, with about $206.7 million coming from state taxpayers. The budget, presented by Vice President Robert Clodius, awaits review by the Coordinating Committee for Higher Education and the 1967 Legislature. No student fee increases are included, but tuition and dormitory rates could rise later if funds are cut. The proposal requests $18.2 million for faculty salaries to maintain and improve the university’s standing. The Governor Knowles opened La Crosse Oktoberfest with the Golden Keg, as the event runs through Sunday.
World Series writer Robert E. Hardell Jr reports from Chicago and will travel to Baltimore to cover Games Three through Five if needed. Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer dominated Dodgers in Game Two with a four hitter as Dodger fielders misplayed six times, Willy Davis committing three errors in one inning.
Ray L. Beckman of Monroe is named one of 10 recipients for the Governor's Awards Banquet at Milwaukee Arena on Oct. 24. He has led Green County Conservation League for 18 years and supported sportsman projects for 35. Other honors span soil to conservation education, with Wisconsin Bowhunters Association winning the organization award.
Charles Russell Schmitz 47 of Avon township was found dead at 5 33 a m in his car four miles southeast of Durand on a county road. He crossed into the southbound lane and hit a bridge. Autopsy to be conducted. Survived by wife Alice Wescott Schmitz three daughters and ten grandchildren. Funeral Monday 1 30 p m at Newcomer Funeral Home Brodhead. Burial Avon Cemetery. Visitation Sunday 7 to 9 p m.
Spring Grove schedules Open Book Day at the town hall Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Taxpayers may inspect the assessment roll as the Board of Review meets Friday at 10 a.m. Oct 14 to review and correct errors and hear complaints about real and personal property assessments.
Women drivers can learn about car safety and maintenance at a free event in Monroe October 19 at Monroe Senior High School Lecture Hall from 7 to 9 30 p m. The program covers buying insuring caring for and driving safely with AAA experts and local educators answering questions on oil changes antifreeze tires and safe passing. Detroit Chrysler Corp resumes production today after settling a strike over working conditions at its Twinsburg Ohio stamping plant.
Anna M Kampfer of Argyle was taken to St Clare Hospital after her car rolled over on County Trunk A near Apple Grove Factory at about 8 p m caused by loose gravel. The vehicle struck two guard posts in Bryce Road driveway before overturning. In a separate incident John J Prick and Hilda M Keen were in a collision five miles north of Highway 92 on a town road at 8 29 p m with rear quarter panel and bumper damage and headlight and fender damage reported.
