New York Waterfront Work Returns After Strike
Normal port operations resumed in New York as 25,000 longshoremen returned to the piers after a two day strike. Transatlantic liners such as the America and Mauretania were in port needing hundreds of workers. Cargo piles rested on shipless docks along the North River front providing work for other gangs. THORP Wis July died today at a Marshfield hospital after a long illness. Verkler 57 was vice president of Blue Moon Foods Corp of Thorp and a former director of the Wisconsin Cheese Exchange at Plymouth. He served as a major in the Army Quartermaster Corps during World War II. He is survived by his wife Lucy. Funeral services will be held at Carthage New York, Verkler’s boyhood home.
Population Survey Begins Next Week
Local interviews for the current population survey will be conducted next week by Mrs. Edna Daly in Beloit. The October survey will ask about school enrollment in addition to standard employment questions, per Percy R. Millard of the U S Census Bureau district office in Milwaukee.

At the Wisconsin Hampshire Breeders Association sale in Green County the fourth annual boar and gift sale drew 29 boars and 34 gifts with prices averaging around 50 dollars. Miss Special Bound from Beloit sold for 180 dollars as grand champion gift. Prairie Supreme from Burlington won grand champion boar and sold for 270 dollars. Reserve champions included Supreme Miss at 130 and Jubilee Medal at 180, with Col W R Ingraham auctioneering and Robert Grummer judging. The event took place at the county fairgrounds livestock pavilion.

Air Force B-50 crashes near Willows killing 11
An Air Force B-50 weather reconnaissance plane from Biggs Air Force Base crashed near Willows California last night. Eleven of the 17 aboard were killed, four enlisted men survived. The plane dove from murky skies at 7 12 p.m. exploding in a massive fireball seen for miles. Bodies recovered include the 11 killed and one man who bailed out and died.
