Arctic Storm Drains Eastern Region With Record Cold

An Arctic cold wave swept the eastern coast, driving temperatures below zero in many areas and into the 16.8 degree range in New York. Snow plagues Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with up to 16 inches, closing rural schools and clogging roads. Ironwood reports 68 inches this season, near last year’s tally. Kalamazoo records 12 to 15 inches since Monday night, paralyzing U.S. 12 traffic.

New Pact Ends Indiana Strike

Striking CIO United Auto Workers voted 86 to 72 to accept a new contract at Perfect Circle Corp in New Castle Indiana ending a four month strike. The two year deal includes a 10 cent hourly wage boost and an additional 7 cents after July 1 with no union shop or layoff pay plan. About 35 strikers discharged during the strike will be addressed, 20 reinstated immediately and eight after 30 days, seven to arbitration. National Guardsmen patrolled the foundry after violence and disruptions surrounding the strike.

Girls Describe Attack on Matron in Summit County Detention Escape

Five teenage girls who escaped from the Summit County detention home last Sunday night allegedly left the elderly matron dead and began surrendering in custody.
