Authorities filed charges against a fourth inmate in the Green Bay State Reformatory riot. Gary L. Simmons, 20, faces assaulting a guard as the cafeteria outbreak caused about 250000 dollars in damage. Eighteen people were injured, including 15 prison staff.
The Pay Board spent seven hours in talks Tuesday without settlement on retroactive pay raises. Treasury Secretary Connally hailed the wage-price freeze as a success while the Fed reported a 0.2 percent October rise in industrial production. Senate moves focus to broad Social Security increases and a campaign-finance plan within the $25.6 billion tax-cut bill, as leaders delay action.
The Green County Board of Supervisors failed to secure the two thirds vote needed to approve an $850,000 expansion of Green County Hospital. A secret ballot on the measure produced a 16-14 result, short of the required margin, defeating plans for a three story kitchen infirmary and Pleasant View unit upgrade. A future consideration is hinted by officials while taxes would rise if funded.
The 117th Green County Fair posted a record profit of 11 583.59 dollars at the stockholders meeting in the Courthouse. New officers include Fred T. Burgy as president and Ken Allen as treasurer with Herbert S. Stauffacher named vice president. Directors Allan Holtshopple and David Cunningham will return, with others up for re election in 1972.
The 1972 county budget totals 4.855 million dollars a rise over last year with an anticipated tax levy of 1.804 million. Public Affairs Committee members urged caution over overruns while the board noted 37 departments exceeded budgets last year and planned further budget work before finalizing. A surplus is unlikely and a higher tax rate is expected. The board approved limited transfers and tax deed acquisitions and recessed to November 30 for more budget review.
The Monroe City budget for 1972 totals 1 360 445 with 990 000 in revenue and a 325 400 tax levy up from 264 845 in 1971. A public hearing is scheduled for Monday November 29 following a recent council meeting. The council also tabled rezoning Sunny Ridge land to permit a 10 unit apartment complex, discussed alley vacation, approved various bids and licenses, and heard Sister Girl Scouts request for recycling support.
Three new directors were elected at the Green County Holstein Breeders Association annual meeting held at the Agricultural Building. New directors are James Huffman Clarno Township Dwight Hoesly New Glarus Township and Robert Wolfe Brodhead, succeeding Donald Timm Forrest Ludwig and Permin Graber. Plans were set for a Spring banquet and a breeders sale on the first Saturday in March at the fairgrounds stock pavilion.
The 1971 Monroe United Fund has reached 75 percent of its 33925 goal with pledges still missing from several business venues. Residential canvass exceeded target by 4 percent while business and industry reach sits at 87 percent and corporate gifts at 88 percent. Two new agencies Braille Foundation and Day Development Center joined the drive under Robert Collins with ongoing efforts through October to ensure every potential contributor is contacted.
