Roy A. Schenk, after being found guilty of falsifying his federal tax withholding exemption, urged war critics at a Madison news conference to seek legal means for citizens to refuse paying taxes funding the Vietnam war. He said he withheld 70 percent of his 1970 taxes for that reason.
Richard W. Mueller, 38, of New Berlin Wisconsin, walked in Stanford Medical Center corridors Friday. He is among the first heart transplant recipients there to walk so soon after surgery and is reported to be doing extremely well. Mueller received the heart of a 17 year old California boy killed in a motorcycle crash.
MADISON Wisconsin AP 3,579 injury claims were filed in September setting a new monthly record surpassing the 3,567 from 1969. Through nine months in 1971 total claims reached 29,689, behind the 30,163 of the same period last year.
GOP National Committeewoman Paula Hawkins urged that half of Wisconsin's delegation to the next Republican National Convention be women. She noted there are 7.5 million more women than men in the country and about three million more women who voted in the last election while addressing about 150 Republican women.
The Associated Press reports Green Bay resident Larry Roberts, 32, died in a Friday two-car collision near DePere raising Wisconsin's 1971 highway fatality toll to 980, down from 998 at the same point last year.
The Wisconsin Public Service Commission ordered Almond Telephone Co near the village of Almond to begin extensive repairs after receiving 91 subscriber complaints. The PSC described the service as one of the most serious inadequate service situations seen in recent years.
A lone robber stole about $1,500 from the Bank of Unity on Friday as a teller, Mrs. Darlene Herrmann, suffered severe head lacerations and was listed in critical condition at a Marshfield hospital. Sheriff Louis Giannali identified the bank as a Unity branch of the Security State Bank of Colby. The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. when the teller was alone and found by a customer making a deposit.
Democratic Rep. Henry Reuss told about 200 attendees at the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO Civil Rights Conference that progress on equality in jobs and education remains unfinished. He warned labor must lead on minority civil rights due to lack of White House direction.
Donald Guerts of Green Bay was convicted in U S District Court on seven of eight counts of receiving and selling stolen cars. His wife Sharlyn Guerts was found guilty on two counts of aiding and abetting in receiving and selling stolen cars. No sentencing date set. Maximum penalties are five thousand dollars per count and five years per count.
Washington AP reports the wage and price freeze ends tonight and is replaced by flexible rules aimed at cutting inflation in half. The Pay Board, Price Commission, and IRS set exemptions and post new ceilings while auto and big‑company contracts gain temporary relief.
President Nixon orders more than a 50 percent faster troop withdrawal from Vietnam delaying longer combat and signaling possible increased bombing of infiltration routes through Laos. He says 45,000 more U.S. troops will leave in December and January, lowering total U.S. forces to about 139,000. The plan includes 25,000 home in December and 20,000 in January, raising monthly withdrawals to 22,500. He cites improved Vietnamese security and aims to keep leverage for negotiations, with further withdrawals anticipated before Feb. 1. The speech notes no American ground combat role end date and emphasizes air power against Ho Chi Minh supply paths. An Albany School District celebration for the state cross country champions is announced for tonight.
Twenty four students and teachers from Milwaukee's Independent Learning Center helped harvest a record corn crop near Wild Rose Wisconsin over two days. They worked with Dan and Lee Anderson who inherited the farm after their father died in a tractor accident.

Agriculture Secretary Clifford Hardin announced his resignation to take an executive post at Ralston Purina and urged a bipartisan united front to improve farming. He urged continued support for farm exports and predicted Nixon would win rural votes in 1972, noting a pending loan bill for young farmers and a multibillion-dollar military pay raise as the wage-price freeze ends.
