State Highway Commission Secretary B. E. Gehrmann said the commission likely would not move forward with a proposed freeway along the U.S. 12 route due to strong public opposition. A Thursday public hearing drew about 350 attendees, most opposed to the project.
Gov. Patrick J. Lucey confirmed appointments to the Higher Educational Aids Board. He named University of Wisconsin regents David Carley of Madison and Mary Williams of Stevens Point to sit on the board, both previously selected by the merged Board of Regents and now requiring gubernatorial approval.
Wisconsin health officials warn parents about turtle pets after 22 turtles linked to 35 salmonella cases in two years. Diarrhea and fever prompted hospitalizations in some patients, said Dr. George Handy.

The 1971 Wisconsin traffic fatality toll reached 979 with the deaths of Steven Burns, 12, of Madison struck by a car and Wallace Richards, 67, of Clintonville who died after a two car collision west of Clintonville.
Sens. Gaylord Nelson and William Proxmire opposed the military section of the foreign aid bill in a 65 24 Senate roll call. They also rejected Sen. Stennis proposed 318 million addition. Proxmire backed the compromise 21.3 billion military rement authorization and Nelson opposed it.
A Madison report says a court reorganization advisory committee proposed a uniform state salary for all Wisconsin trial judges. It would end supplemental county payments and ban counties from providing extra compensation.

Green County Conservation Banquet honored top conservationists led by John Erb named best farmer. Spring Creek watershed won for Green County with 170 contour acres on three farms and two waterways. State Conservationist Richard Akeley spoke on ongoing conservation goals and the need for federal state and local agency partnerships.
The Price Commission outlines how thawing prices after the freeze will curb overall increases to 2.5 percent or less, with adjustments by cost changes and productivity. Pay Board sets 5.5 percent wage ceiling, to be published in the Federal Register, while rents stay frozen for now.

President Nixon nominated Earl L. Butz to lead the Agriculture Department after resigning Secretary Clifford M. Hardin. Butz, former Eisenhower official, is praised by farm groups though critics warn of returning Benson era policies. Hardin joins Ralston Purina as vice chairman, citing respect for Nixon and his policies.
At the 80th Wisconsin Cheesemakers Association convention in Oshkosh on Nov 10 and 11, about 25 Monroe area cheesemakers and their wives attended. David Seeholzer won director representation, with multiple winners in drum Swiss, brick, muenster, and other divisions. Alice in Dairyland presented ribbons and read journal excerpts from her cheesemaker grandfather.
