Monroe Junior High Unit Helps Pupil Transition

Parents visiting Monroe Junior High during American Education week saw how 402 seventh and eighth graders shift from self contained classes to a schedule of seven 51 minute periods. Principal John Thompson oversees twenty teachers guiding students through exploratory elective options in home economics art industrial arts band vocal music science history and math. Social growth is supported by supervised activities clubs student council sports and the school newspaper.

County Rejects Shared Airport Ownership Proposal

Green County Supervisors voted 17 to 15 against joining Monroe in a joint ownership of the municipal airport. They approved the 1966 budget reducing net spending by 77,559.62 and transferring 200,000 from the general fund to cut property taxes to 1,128,077.49 from 1,205,637.11. Backers argued joint ownership would speed upgrades like a paved runway and lighting, noting the airport serves local clinics and businesses. Opponents cited city financial limits after a tornado and cyclone and questioned county benefit. The city offered 20,000 for partial ownership, a fraction of total cost.

Week of Emphasis Drive Benefits Green County Retarded Children

The Green County Association for Retarded Children launches a fund drive chaired by Mrs. Frank Salzwedel during National Retarded Children's Week from November 14 to 25. Exchange Group To Return Sunday

The Monroe High School exchange group will fly home Sunday after a week in Pittsburgh with North Hills High School. They departed Monroe Friday November 5 and spent tonight at the Balmark Hotel in Chicago, returning tomorrow. Advisors Fred Simpson and Mrs. Herbert Ainsworth reported a thoroughly enjoyed trip and activities on schedule.

Harvest Going Strong Farmers Cautioned About Corn Pickers

Harvest is about 40 percent complete across the county with moisture ranging from 22 to 28 percent. Farmers are urged to follow five safety rules for corn pickers, avoid loose clothing, disengage power take off before adjustments, keep guards in place, and keep children away from machinery. The National Safety Council adds proper slip clutch settings and checking operation by hand. A fire extinguisher is advised on the picker or tractor due to heat risk with dry corn.

City Council Approves Liquor License Transfer

The Monroe City Council in a special session approved transferring a liquor license from a burned West Side location to the Eugene Hotel. Nathan and Robert Goetz, operators of the restaurant and bar, requested the transfer, returning the license to the Eugene Hotel temporarily as the Swiss Colony Inn location is rebuilt.

Lafayette County Board of Supervisors Remap Overturned

Circuit Judge Richard Orton ruled the Oct 15 21 district reapportionment plan for Lafayette County 28 member board violated equal representation and one vote per person standards. A new plan must be certified by 10 a.m. Saturday Nov 20 or the court will redraw districts. The special committee led by Byron Berg will report to the County Board next Tuesday.

Monroe High School Symphonic Band Christmas Concert

The 88 piece Monroe High School Symphonic Band prepares its 32nd annual Christmas Concert under Allan F. Barnard with Vance W. Nelson as assistant. It features Gesu Bambino Silent Night and a program including Golden Gate March and Days of Glory tribute to Viet Nam. Proceeds fund band activities and instruments.

Illinois Tornado Kills One Injures Forty Five

A Joliet area tornado destroyed Preston Heights Sugar Creek and Channahon neighborhoods. One elderly woman died from debris. her husband is hospitalized. About 45 injured and over 200 left homeless as homes and trailers were demolished.

Zely Delivers Nine Puppies at Alfred Meier Farm

Zely the St Bernard mascot of the Chicago Fire Department gave birth to five females and four males at the Alfred Meier farm on Veterans Day. Father Onar and mother Zely, both Swiss imports, produced the litter with no veterinary aid. The pups will stay at the kennel for about two weeks as visiting firemen may stop by.
