Green County conservation banquet honors farmers and cooperators

The Green County SWCD honored Ralph Kubly and other district cooperators at the Conservation Recognition Banquet in Monroe. Awards recognized outstanding conservation farming, Streambank Improvement, Wildlife Habitat Developments, and long‑time service. over 200 attended the Dutch's Inn event.

Fort Atkinson woman wins DNR action on Lake Koshkonong plant

Richelle Lisse campaigned for environmental safeguards against a 1.4 billion dollar nuclear plant plan by four utilities on Lake Koshkonong near Fort Atkinson Wisconsin. The DNR cited water supply and ecological concerns, shaping public opinion and drawing support from state Senator Dale McKenna. The case highlighted citizen activism against large utilities and stressed government responsiveness to local concerns.

Monroe FFA meats team takes 13th at national contest

Monroe FFA Chapter meats judging team placed 13th among 36 state teams at the national meats contest during the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. Individual medals went to Steven Gobeli gold, William Ludwig silver, Bernard Neumann bronze, and Marlene Cordes led in national speaking finals with fourth place before 16,000 spectators.

Last hurrah at Chicago Stock Yard Inn ends era

More than 600 livestock men gather for a final tribute at the Tudor style Stock Yard Inn before its demolition the day after Christmas. The hotel once hosted packers and politicians while drovers and cowboys used a dorm. the yards closed in 1971, leaving only landmarks behind.

Community Thanksgiving Meal Planned at MAAC

The Monroe churches and the Monroe Arts and Activities Center will co sponsor the second annual Community Thanksgiving Meal on Thanksgiving Day November 25 at 1230 p.m. in Wesley Hall MAAC. Reservations are requested to help plan. Families are urged to share meals with those who may be alone and to contribute food or funds as they wish.

Time-of-day rate plan tentatively okayed in Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Public Service Commission gave tentative approval to a time-of-day electrical rate structure that would affect more than 100 industrial and commercial customers of Wisconsin Power and Light Co. Residential customers would not be affected. The plan would raise rates for 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday to shift demand to periods with ample generating capacity.
