Parents may schedule conferences with senior and junior high teachers next week during free periods and after school by advance appointment. On Nov 12 the senior high will use an irregular schedule for yearbook photos, and the Nov 19 PTA meeting will begin at 7:45 p.m.
Donald C. Hoeft a 32 year old Jefferson elementary school teacher was named president elect of the Wisconsin Education Association. He defeated Paul M. Loothoro New London superintendent and will take office Jan 1 1960. Other officers include Harry W. Jones Edith Luedke Gus C. Bell and Lloyd R. Moseng with Donald E. Upson as District V representative. Delegates rejected a proposal to require teachers to disclose sources of extra revenue such as a sales tax.
Madison Wisconsin Republican Gov Vernon Thomson returns to office after defeat by Gaylord Nelson. He jokes his hours will drop from 18 to 8 a day and says no vacation planned. Thomson notes a state surplus and strong economy as he leaves office with term ending January.
Labor may gain leverage over business in shaping a new Congress to curb corruption, as AFL-CIO backs a Kennedy Ives style bill and pushes for broader Taft Hartley reform. George Meany urges national legislation to curb corruption in unions and among employers who influence union leaders.
OGALLALA Neb Ver non Dillman 22 sought in the Ruth Schmidt Oshkosh death is returned to Wisconsin. Sheriff Lowry, Deputy Peppler, and Sgt Burgert accompanied to Oshkosh as the district attorney says he has no word on Dillman s statements. Schmidt 17 was found in a ditch near Oshkosh after missing since August 15 and a nationwide pickup had been issued for him as a parole violator. The warrant cites paternity of an unborn child.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla A strange knocking noise halted the Pioneer moon rocket launch in a driving rain delaying the Air Force attempt to reach a satellite around the moon. The postponement came 12 34 a m with two more chances planned this month and a critical 18 to 20 minute launch window. If not fired then the next feasible slot is December. The fault was listed as technical and could not be pinpointed in time. Two prior attempts had failed.
Mrs. Donald Brinkmeier 27 of Brodhead died unexpectedly after surgery at Wisconsin General Hospital Madison. Born Yoshie Yasuma in Shizuoka Japan November 10 1930 she lived in North China and Japan before marrying in 1955 and settling in Brodhead. Services Sunday 2 p.m. Newcomer Funeral Home Brodhead with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
Penn-Texas Corp. took control of Fairbanks Morse and Co in a brief Chicago meeting at Continental National Bank. Alfons Landa handed $9,511,392 to an attorney for Col. Robert H. Morse Sr. and provided $100,000 earlier, buying 297,231 shares. Landa replaced Leopold Silberstein as Penn-Texas chief after two failed proxy battles in 1956.
New York stock prices churned unevenly in fairly active trading. Leading issues gained and lost fractions to about a point as profit taking continued. Brokers said the market was due for a breathing spell after the post election upsurge to new record peaks.
Green Bay reports no sales at the Wisconsin Cheese Exchange for a second straight week while values stay steady. Offers shown include three cars cheddar at 32 4, two cars Illinois U S Grade A cheddar at 32 4. Bids unfilled include one car 40 lb blocks at 33, one car raw milk single daisies at 34 4, and five cars U S Grade A cheddar at 31 4. Trading tone remains steady.
Senator Lyndon Johnson pledged Democratic cooperation with President Eisenhower while outlining a 12 point program. He said Democrats would offer constructive alternatives when disagreeing and avoid partisan warfare as the 1960 election looms. Johnson noted farm policy reforms area development and lower interest rates as priorities.
Washington reported a record nonpresidential election turnout with over 46.0 million votes cast across 48 states in unofficial counts. The tally, though unofficial, surpassed the 1954 midterm record but trailed state forecasts of about 48 million. the prior large turnout was the 1956 presidential election year with over 52 million ballots cast.
Ten on ice floe saved by C123 from Thule as five day isolation ends. Twenty IGY scientists and airmen in two halves of a 1000 foot square ice floe drifted 300 miles from the pole. They were flown to Thule and then Ladd Base Alaska in excellent condition.
The Green County Board of Supervisors will reconvene at 10 a.m. Monday to focus on the 1959 county budget. Budget sessions began last week and were adjourned Friday night until Nov. 10 due to heavy election activity in the county clerk’s office. A highway commission election is expected to be on the agenda with incumbent H Eugene Segner opposed by T R Newman. the first ballot Friday tied 14 to 14.
Aurora mayor Paul Egan was convicted of disorderly conduct and fined 157.20 after a four hour trial. Curran and two witnesses testified against the 60 year old leader who called a meeting Oct 14 to mobilize residents to replace the police force.
Rep. Melvin Laird of Marshfield told the Wisconsin Cheese makers and Buttermakers Association that the next Congress may consider dairy production controls based on three year averages. He warned against exemptions for cow numbers or deficit areas. Delegates rejected ending price supports after April 1 1969 and instead urged a one cent cheese price support increase to match butter and powdered milk levels.
The St. Paul Union Stockyards Co embargoed shipments of livestock to its pens effective Saturday at 3 p.m. The ban followed a threat by 330 livestock handlers represented by Local 160 United Packinghouse Workers to walk out Monday at 6 a.m. in support of a new contract.
The AEC announced two Soviet nuclear tests on Nov 1 and 3 with low yields. Eisenhower urged the Soviet Union to join a temporary ban on testing and warned the U.S. may rethink its suspension if Moscow does not renounce further tests. Britain and the U.S. pressed Geneva talks on an inspection regime.
Irving A. Biba Jr. 34 of Hillsboro was arraigned in Rock County on a negligent homicide charge connected to a three car crash that killed Madison hockey players Gerald Keepers 21 and Richard Wills 22 Sunday night. Bond set at 3000 pending Nov 19 hearing.
