Sheriff reports widespread pre Halloween vandalism at rural schools solved. Eleven Monroe and Browntown youths plus two Browntown area youths now face juvenile delinquency warrants. City case mirrors county incidents.
Three men, two armed with submachine guns, robed a Northwestern branch of the First Wisconsin National Bank in Milwaukee during a heavy snowstorm. They grabbed $92,571, escaped in a car, while a bystander noted the license plate and rescued some currency. No injuries reported. The bank manager said eight customers were inside. a $10,900 reward was announced for tips leading to arrests.
Key West readies for President Truman on his tenth working vacation in four years. The little white house on the Key West naval station is spotless as Truman plans a stay of several weeks. He is to fly in from Washington to Boca Chica naval air station with no return date announced.
Blizzard like conditions blanketed Illinois Wisconsin and Missouri as drifts up to several feet closed highways stalled cars and forced factory closures. Snow totals ranged to six inches in Janesville and up to 15 inches across the Midwest with 40 mph winds and 35 foot waves on Lake Michigan. Public transit was restored in St. Louis as temperatures warmed and rain turned to slush.
J A Strand of the water department and T L Drescher of the U S Geological Survey lead a team of four government geologists arriving to test City wells. They will study all five wells for 24 hours daily through Saturday, focusing on Well 5 whose output fell from 1000 to 800 gallons per minute. Wells 1 and 4 have also decreased since installation. Well 1 remains on continuously. others run intermittently during testing.
Chicago business and academic figure Park Livingston, president of the University of Illinois board of trustees, announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor next year. Livingston has served as a university trustee since 1941 and as vice president and counsel of Dean Milk Co.
United Nations rejected a new buffer zone proposal from North Korea while hinting at talks in Panmunjom. The plan would anchor a zone to the current front with potential adjustments, though veto rights could block changes. In western front fighting, UN troops recaptured a hill near Yonchon after Chinese overran it. elsewhere rain dampened combat as artillery and tank actions continued along the front. Communist jets and Allied counterattacks persisted with no injuries reported by Fifth Air Force.
The Wisconsin domestic Swiss cheese market stays firm at higher prices for top grades as light, tightly held supplies meet lighter demand but still good. State assembly prices list 47 51 for state brand, 44 47 for grade B, and 41 44 for grade C. American cheese shows barely steady to weak cheddar prices while small styles stay steady. Assembly points list single daisies 41 6 42 2, longhorns 42 43 44, square prints 42 14 43 12, midgets 43 34 45 12.

Freddy Mc Evoy, 43, famed sportsman and ex-husband of oil heiresses, perished saving his French wife Claude as his yacht Kangaroo wrecked on rocks 100 miles south of Casablanca. Four others died, three crew swam to safety, Mc Evoy and his wife sank after 18 hours aboard the stricken vessel.
Malinovsky tells Red Square crowd that the USSR will defend itself against any aggressor as Beria and Malenkov review a Lenin tomb parade. He says the Soviet Union is fully armed and not seeking to attack the United States.
The Associated Press notes a GOP gain of one House seat as Democrats seize Philadelphia City Hall for the first time in 68 years and voter unrest grows. Rudolph Halley becomes NYC council president amid Tammany’s defeats, while Indianapolis backs a Republican mayoral win. Republicans tout a four-seat congressional sweep, netting 200 to 233 in the House with one vacancy in Nebraska and one independent seat.
The Salvation Army began a Monroe fund drive targeting a $1500 goal with a kickoff attended by over 35 workers despite bad weather. Chairman Herman A. Stuessy was ill and absent. Miss Ruth Chase reviewed a year of local activities, Maj. Alex Stenhouse summarized the Army’s national and global program, and Gottlob Krauss served coffee and doughnuts.
The city council finance committee proposed a total budget of 549512.81 for city schools and county tax levy, up from 481894 last year, with the city budget at 336022.50 and the overall tax roll to be reduced by about 228808.48. Cadiz township Swiss cheese maker Arthur Drew operated the Scott factory four miles southwest of Browntown until today when milk shortages forced its closure. State dairy inspector Stanley Everson noted the facility will not reopen soon as no immediate plans exist for the business.
