President Ford conceded defeat to Jimmy Carter in the 1976 race and pledged a smooth transition. Betty Ford read a telegram applauding Carter and Ford telephoned his message of support, urging national unity after a long campaign. Ford appeared hoarse and was treated by his physician before addressing reporters.
Incumbent Republican Joe Tregoning secured a second term with 12 598 votes in Green and Lafayette Counties and 7 716 in Green and 4 882 in Lafayette for a total 12 598 5 254 in the two counties. Barb Bogden gained 3 372 Green and 1 882 Lafayette. County results show Dave Leeper defeating Jim Beer for district attorney 6 650 to 6 119.
In Wisconsin Carter wins with 1,035,759 votes to Ford's 1,000,777 out of over 99 percent counted. The 11 electoral votes push his tally to at least 270, yielding a narrow victory in a state that last saw a closer race in 1944. Gene McCarthy had 154 votes. Green County favored Ford 7,085 to 5,632.
Democrats keep their congressional seats in Wisconsin and hold the Assembly, according to page 17 details. The report notes party control remains in the Badger State with continued Democratic presence in both chambers.

Lafayette County Clerk Eugene Thompson found in old records that yesterday’s voting produced a county record with 8,247 ballots cast. The nearest prior tally was 7,702 in the 1972 presidential election.
Wisconsinites vote against broadening state bonding to support rail lines and mass transit while approving relaxation of residency rules for new voters. Incomplete returns show seven counties backing the transit measure. Green County approves residency change by a wide margin.
