The Monroe Senior High and newly remodeled Junior High host open houses during American Education Week. High school sessions mimic daily schedules with seven 20 minute periods and five minute transitions. Parents tour, observe classes, and may meet teachers for curriculum and teaching method explanations.
The Board of Public Works recommended the City Council accept Olson Electric Co. of Brodhead with a $3,653 bid for an emergency generator at the new municipal building. Other bids were Rubi and Leuenberger $3,895 and Motor Mart $4,600. The council meets at 7:30 p.m. to act and hear the 1965 budget for the first time. A public budget hearing is set for Nov. 17.
The county offers new multi colored envelopes with county photos at one cent each. 250000 envelopes were received and over 150000 sold. Envelopes can be obtained from county supervisors, the county clerk at the Courthouse, the Beckman garage in Monroe, and The Monroe Evening Times.
Seven year old Maria Elena Jijon of Quito born with a crippling deformity faces surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. Doctors led by J Drennan Lowell repair hips in two operations funded by donations from three Boston residents and George Swartz who pledges any surplus to her education. The Jijon family suffered the Boston hotel fire that claimed her parents, Fabian and Lola Jijon, as they pursued treatment, with Swartz mobilizing aid after reading of the tragedy.
Senator Barry Goldwater cast his vote in Phoenix District 23 after waiting 80 minutes at a polling place near his hilltop home. He declined to reveal his choice, spoke of the race against Lyndon Johnson as a horse race, and left with his family, while students greeted him at the Phoenix Country Day School.
Students at Monroe High School cast ballots with Lyndon B. Johnson winning two to one over Barry Goldwater. Johnson led across grades with totals 140 freshmen to 70, 155 sophomores to 66, 112 juniors to 54, and 121 seniors to 61. Kastenmeier won re-election 444 to 329. Wilbur Renk beat Proxmire 515 to 269 for Senate. State races saw Knowles over Reynolds 513 to 264 and others sway as listed. Galli defeated opponent for Green Lafayette Assembly 563 to ?
The Agriculture Department reports dairy farmers received an average of 44 cents of every dollar consumers spent on dairy products in the first nine months of the year, similar to last year. Since 1954, the farm share has fallen from 47 cents, and the department expects this level to continue next year.
Voters described turnout as heavy across the state but still below the 1960 presidential level. In Monroe County, the assembly race features incumbent G Fred Galli Republican versus Fred Lienhardt Democrat. District Attorney Louis A Koenig runs as the lone write-in. County officials remain largely unopposed. Polls opened at 9 am in Turner hall and close at 6 pm with results to be recorded at the courthouse.
Washington analysts and political insiders study weathervane counties and states that have backed every winner since 1900, noting places like Coos and Strafford in New Hampshire and Nassau County in New York as signals. Caution is urged as backlashes and defections could tilt outcomes for Johnson or Goldwater.
North school will close at noon tomorrow in memory of Mrs. Nell Cunningham, longtime principal, whose son died in a Nebraska auto accident. The Monroe district will dismiss early. funeral set for 2 p.m. at St John’s Church with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Alumni plan to attend in a group at 1:45 p.m.
Illinois voters faced a tight Kerner Percy governor contest with about 4.5 million voters casting ballots as polls opened at 6 a.m. The race was pivotal for the national scene with Goldwater seeking victory in a must win state. Voters also chose 177 state House members amid an orange ballot.
Mrs. Virginia Lubcke a former nursing home operator is ordered to trial November 30 on a charge of attempting to hire someone to kill her husband.
Melvin Waelti, formerly of Jefferson Township, heads Melbourne Sand and Supply Co. in Eau Gallie Brevard County. The firm markets white silica sand used in concrete blocks plastering and ready mix, arriving by rail from Miami and delivered by company trucks. Waelti notes national attention from Hough Manufacturing and cites booming construction including 12 new schools in Eau Gallie area.
In Johnson City Texas President Johnson and his wife voted the Democratic ticket in a rural polling place. He arrived with his wife and left after seven minutes, stating he would vote the straight ticket from the courthouse to the White House. The couple's ballots were not secret. The community of 600 was founded by the President's grandfather.
In Independence Missouri former president Harry S Truman, age 80, voting early, used a cane to reach a polling place three blocks from his home and cast his ballot at 6 30 a m.
The Brodhead City Council approved a $250000 Apco Manufacturing Co plant and new building plans, agreed to fluoridate the water supply, and approve elm tree spraying this fall. They also heard protests against a mobile home trailer ordinance and set a public hearing for a potential motel across from Peterson South Side Grocery.
An explosion leveled the Janesville Sand and Gravel Co plant early today. The fire marshal investigates the blast heard six miles away. no injuries reported as only one wall remains standing.
