Search Continues in Italy For American Soldier Dead
Italy preserves American war dead five years after the Gothic line defeat, with recoveries of two or more per week. Most remains lie in Apennine forests or small farmland plots, some in unmarked foxholes. One US recovery team works amid minefields as Italian forces aid the search. Memorial Day observances near Nettuno Anzio and Florence honor graves, with Lt Gen Keyes and Italian minister Pacciardi attending. About 12,000 American soldiers are buried in Italy, with 7,228 at Nettuno Anzio and 4,386 near Florence. Families may still request home reburial through 1951 provisions, though transfers have slowed.
