Overpayment Refund Confounds Navy Wife and Son
A federal income tax refund of 555000 reached an 18 year old navy yeoman whose expected sum was 23. Thomas Greck of Dunkirk said the check nearly popped out his head as the mail arrived. Richie, stationed at the San Diego base, had worked for New York Telephone in Olean last year. A bureau spokesman in New York offered no comment until further investigation. The Albany office would be contacted to reach Richie promptly about the error.

Famed Walter Johnson Battling Brain Tumor at Georgetown Hospital
Legendary pitcher Walter Johnson, longtime Washington star and Hall of Famer, is critically ill with a brain tumor at Georgetown Hospital after a light stroke earlier in April. The 58 year old, who debuted with the Senators in 1907 and later managed both Washington and Cleveland, showed impairment but had regained some mobility before slipping into unconsciousness. Doctors report increasing pressure on the brain and family was summoned as prognosis remains uncertain. Johnson’s 21 seasons with the Senators included 413 wins, 113 shutouts, and seven straight seasons with 200 plus strikeouts before retiring in 1927 and later earning Cooperstown induction in 1936.
