AP News In Brief reports Apollo 13 inquiry head says insulation damage may have occurred before launch as oxygen tank was filled for rehearsal and not drained normally. In Columbus, Ohio, National Guardsmen clashed with demonstrators near OSU, about 30 arrests, injuries limited to bruises.
U S officials say secretary of State William P Rogers is briefing North Atlantic allies that the Cambodia campaign serves wider stability in Asia. The administration has also cited plans to withdraw the 150000 U S troops from Vietnam by next June as context for the move.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers plans a high level call with Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin in Washington next week to urge Moscow to halt its growing military role near the Arab Israeli conflict. Officials say he will warn of serious consequences if Soviet pilots act further.
Mrs. Duane McKenna announced seven Browntown candidates for the Dairy Queen title. Voters may cast ballots through June 13 in local Monroe stores, with the Browntown queen to be crowned June 17 at Village Park during an Ice Cream Social.
The Monroe Lions Club announces Stephen Krupke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Delbert G. Krupke, as the 1970 recipient of the $600 Lions Club scholarship. Krupke, involved in sports, theater, and student clubs, will receive $300 for the coming year and $300 for a second year.
Memorial Day activities start 7 a.m. May 30 with grave decoration at Greenwood Cemetery. Parade assembles 8:30 a.m. at Lincoln School and proceeds to the cemetery by 9. The Greenwood program features Monroe High School band and speeches by P. J. Connors Rev L. J. Kieffer and others, with wreaths placed by veterans groups and a firing squad.
North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops fought into Prey Veng early today, then withdrew after street fighting. In another attack, they captured Tang Krasang north of Phnom Penh. U S and Cambodian reports show casualties and a drop in American deaths last week, with 3 321 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong killed.
Congressman Bob Kastenmeier of Watertown announced his bid for re election to Congress from Wisconsin second district. He noted two main issues environment and human relations while outlining his district which includes Columbia Dane Dodge Green and Jefferson counties. His lone announced opponent is Norman C Anderson from Whitewater set to move into the district this summer.
At Green County Fairgrounds on Memorial Day the opening ceremonies will feature Mauerman presenting colors before the Grandstand. The event, led by Floyd Achterberg, includes 20 teams in two weight classes and a Jaycee Chicken Barbecue with antique car display. Proceeds fund a Lincoln Park shelter house.
Memorial Day hours announced for Monroe Post Office. No city or rural route mail delivery and no window service. Normal holiday lock box and special delivery services will operate. Collection, receipts and dispatch follow holiday schedules, limited to Monroe only. nearby offices such as New Glarus and Monticello remain closed.
