President Truman asked Congress to raise maximum unemployment benefits to 25 a week and allow 26 weeks of aid per year during the war to peace reconversion. General Mark Clark will lead a hand-picked group of U S Fifth Army veterans to Chicago for Memorial Day. The party includes Maj. Gen. Nathan F Twining born in Monroe and Brig. Gen. Ralph Immel Wisconsin adjutant general on leave. The 50 officers and men were selected as representatives of the Fifth Army and were said to have distinguished themselves.
The Green County AAA office warns many dairy men have not filed their dairy feed statements for the first quarter of 1945. The filing deadline is May 31, after which no payments may be valid.
Sunday rainfall totaled 1.37 inches with violent electrical displays as winds shifted from southeast to south to southwest then northwest. Officers and non coms of Co F Wisconsin national guard attended a three day training school May 25 26 27 at Camp Williams near Mauston. The program included bayonet training map reading field messages scouting interior guard duty and gas training with church services and rifle marksmanship. Over 600 officers and men from 48 companies statewide attended, with units from Albany Juda and Monroe represented.

A cablegram from Oslo, Norway, dated Sunday told Sara Birkestoll she is well. Mrs Birkestoll, a Monroe visitor in 1939, is known to many local residents.
Capt. William Glasgow of Niagara Falls was killed when an experimental aircraft crashed after hitting a car during a war bond aviation show at Wright Field. Five civilians were critically injured as more than 70,000 spectators watched. Maj. Richard Bong witnessed the crash from the field and had been flying overhead.
A Japanese agency claimed the sinking of three U. S. Navy vessels and three transports near Okinawa's Nakagusuku Bay by kamikaze planes. The AP notes the claim is unconfirmed. Also reported is a final agreement on the Yalta voting formula allowing any nation to bring disputes before a projected world security council without veto by major powers.
President Truman met for about an hour with Herbert Hoover to discuss European relief needs. Hoover declined to discuss the conference while pledging no remarks about his talks. Truman invited Dewey and Landon to visit the White House for consultations on national and international issues, signaling bipartisan outreach.
Washington report says seven new hospital ships will join the mercy fleet by midsummer, boosting capacity from 20 000 to 30 500 patients and moving toward the Pacific as Atlantic evacuations wind down. Wing, charged with taking 748 dollars on May 19 1944, was found guilty last week and only now handed the sentence.
Lt Gen James H. Doolittle lists Monroe and vicinity servicemen among those commended. Named are T/3 John H. Walter of a Third Air Division communications unit, S/Sgt. Francis B. Doherty in England with a photo reconnaissance group, Cpl Elwin D. Priewe, Pfc Russell R. Schober of a fighter group, Sgt Gordon H. Kubly and Hengy Kubly of Monroe, plus First Ralph A.
