North Vietnamese forces struck U S infantrymen in two Cambodian locations 22 miles apart, killing eight Americans and wounding 35. U S casualties in Cambodian operations rose to 216 killed and 807 wounded, with enemy losses not reported. The Fishhook area north of Saigon saw increased North Vietnamese activity.
The Senate planned its first vote on revising a proposal to curb U.S. involvement in Cambodia. Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield voiced alarm at renewed Cambodian calls for a continued U.S. presence after Nixon's June 30 withdrawal deadline. A Cooper Church amendment to limit funds faced an early afternoon decision.
Israeli troops again crossed into Lebanon in a patrolling action against Arab guerrillas attacking settlements on the frontier. Maj. Gen. Mordechai Gur said the patrols aim to keep guerrillas away from the frontier and restore calm.
President Nixon told NATO allies in a letter read at the NAC meeting that U.S. action in Cambodia is needed to enable withdrawal of American forces. The letter cites nearly 7,900 enemy killed with 201 U.S. and 451 South Vietnamese dead. It was addressed to NATO Secretary General Manlio Brosio.

First day for circulating papers for the September primary is near. Five of seven incumbents plan to seek re election while one will not run and another is unavailable for comment. District Attorney Louis A. Keenig says he will not seek another term. No candidate has officially announced for the vacant post. Opening day is June 1 for papers and July 14 is the filing deadline.
The Nixon administration formally notified Congress it will provide 7.5 million dollars in small arms to Cambodia. A letter to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee disclosed the action, with 7,200 M2 carbines cited by Ellsworth Bunker and President Nixon's April 30 announcement setting the context.

Thirty one residents gathered at the Community Center to organize a Monroe community drama group to be called The Monroe Community Theatre. Mrs. John Norton chaired the session. Mrs. Joseph Ganshert was secretary. A constitutional planning committee was named with Parsons as chairman. A telephone committee was also formed to recruit members and organize future by law driven activities.
New York AP reports stock prices fell in active trading with the Dow Jones average down to 637.19 by 10 30 a m after the opening bell. The brief notes a downward drift as markets reacted to early trading.
