Eleven freedom riders white and Negro broke racial barriers at a Montgomery bus station lunchroom and headed to New Orleans under heavy military guard. National Guardsmen and police sealed the block to prevent riots while a convoy of troops traveled toward the Mississippi state line with precautions along the route through Selma Demopolis Meridian and Jackson.

The Wisconsin Assembly adopted a resolution commending James Zwerg of Appleton for his courage in support of equality. Zwerg, a Beloit College student, who studied at Fisk University, was beaten during a Freedom Ride riot in Montgomery, Alabama. The measure was introduced by Assemblyman Isaac Coggs. Beloit College students and faculty also praised Zwerg.

Mishap injures young Wickline as car rolls
Brenda Wickline four year old daughter of New Glarus marshal and Mrs Calvin D Wickline was treated for abrasions and bruises after being knocked over by her parents car which rolled from a parking place on 19th avenue in the 600 block. The car also struck a parked vehicle owned by Howard D Wells causing considerable damage. Police said a boy released the hand brake, believed to have started the incident. In a separate accident Julius Hofer escaped injury when his car knocked over a United Telephone Co enclosure and wedged in a manhole at 9th street and 18th avenue. Right front wheel lodged in the hole but only minor damage occurred. two employees below were not injured.

MADISON The Senate voted 16 to 14 to defeat a bill that would have made retail trade stamps redeemable for merchandise as well as cash. Supporters switched to oppose amid numerous amendments, and the final form would have barred gas stations from issuing stamps with further trade stamp restrictions.

Passage of a new agricultural marketing act for Wisconsin was recommended by the Senate agriculture committee. 18 Servicemen Killed in Globemaster Crash Near McChord
A C124 Globemaster on a predawn flight from McChord Air Force Base crashed five miles from the field, killing 18 service members and injuring four critically. The aircraft carried 15 soldiers from Fort Sill and seven crew, took off in fog, and came down in a wooded area near Fort Lewis, Washington.
