Mantle belts 500-foot homer as Yankees rally

Mickey Mantle crushed a 500-foot homer off Bill Fischer in the 11th inning to lift the Yankees 8-7 over the Athletics. Mantle, watching Gordon Cooper’s space flight parade, called it the hardest ball he ever hit. The game featured other AL and NL results with Orioles, White Sox, Dodgers, and Cubs winning. Mantle’s ninth homer and third in two days marked a rare facade shot, a feat only he has accomplished at Yankee Stadium.
