Space Center Houston reports Apollo 10 astronauts Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan entering the lunar module to begin systems checks before detaching from John Young in the command ship. They plan a descent to within 50,000 feet over the Sea of Tranquility.
Green County residents 16 and older may enter the dairy salad contest running weekly from May 26 to June 21 and a final tasting on June 27. Entrants must include two dairy products, provide contact details, and mail recipes to the Agricultural Building Monroe. Co chairs are Mrs Don Witt and Mrs Ralph Baltzer.
The Hill family of ten lost their two story rental near Warren when an oil furnace explosion ignited the home, leaving them homeless with only the clothes they wore. They are staying with relatives in Apple River and donations of clothing and household items are sought at Apple River Motor Co. and with Walter Schuepp in Monroe. Ray Hill Jr., a Vietnam veteran on leave, is among the children aged 3 to 14, plus a 21 year old son.
The Albany Lions Club prepares for a 2 p m Saturday May 24 parade at Lake Delton with 114 units promoting used glasses for reuse. Members Fred Baertschi John Hlavachek Dan Weber and others attend the Lions State Convention and plan future events including Maxwell Street Day June 14 a downtown auction and a July 19 dance at Larson's Red Barn.
The first of two student award assemblies at Monroe High School honored Christine Schuepp as the UW Alumni scholarship recipient. Perfect attendance awards went to Tom Peterson and Linda Bury, with Mary Usher earning a DAR certificate. Drama, band, debate, and GAA awards were presented to numerous students, with trees planted by the student exchange group and further honors to be announced later.
The final full day of classes at St Victor's Parochial School is set for Wednesday June 4 with report cards distributed Friday June 6 following Monroe Public School System closing dates for 1968 69. Thursday June 5 is a free day.
Plans for Monroe School term end include outdoor commencement on Thursday June 5 at Holyoke Athletic Field with fallback to the high school gym. Baccalaureate speaker Peter Martyn, top ten percent honors banquet June 3, and diplomas by Rodney Kittelsen. Report cards issued June 6. no bus service June 4–5. lunch programs end June 3.
Marshall Malloy Chicago Central Regional President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles will attend the 22nd anniversary of Monroe Cheese Capital Aerie. A meeting at 2:30 p.m. precedes a 6:30 p.m. anniversary banquet at the Eagles Club. Tickets from Eagles members. Malloy’s background spans Knox College Chicago Law School and teaching work plus Seabees service in World War II.
Milwaukee remembers Helen Cromell known as Dirty Helen who ran the Sun Flower Inn for 34 years on Milwaukee’s near West Side. She died at 83 after a blood clot while living in a nursing center. born in Noblesville Indiana, she will be buried there.
