The draft chief announced indefinite deferments for men 30 through 37 in useful work and a 25 percent rise in younger calls. Beginning in July the draft will drop to about 90 000 with mandatory reviews of 4-F and limited service.
Marines and Army troops fight to penetrate Shuri Fortress on Okinawa as fierce Japanese counterattacks clash on Sugar Loaf hill and Yonabaru. About 200 Japanese dead were counted, with heavy Marine casualties and continued bitter fighting across the fortified area.
Washington reports Japanese balloons have attacked western areas with some devices landing or dropping explosives. A joint statement urged public vigilance to avoid unexploded bombs and to not touch any unfamiliar objects found in isolated spots or wooded areas.
Britain moves toward a summer general election as Churchill rejects delaying the ballot. Labour rejects coalition and resignations loom for Attlee Morrison Bevin Alexander Cripps Sinclair. Allied forces from the Eighth Army moved into Trieste as Tito’s Yugoslavia reportedly agrees to Allied terms. American and British troops advanced about six miles from the Isonzo and coastal road, with minimal resistance and one American wounded by a mine near a roadblock.

Edward Ackerman of Monroe Route 4 pleaded noto con tente to hit and run and leaving the scene after paying a $60 fine for drunken driving. The charges stem from an early morning collision involving Mrs. John L. Meyers at 1 21 a m near 19th Street, sending Meyers to St. Clare Hospital with cuts and bruises. The other vehicle was a 1929 Model A Ford driven by Orville Rear with Mrs. Rear as a passenger. Police say Ackerman’s car struck Rear’s truck, then sped away. Additional minor crashes were reported, including a 1941 DeSoto hit by Kenneth Welton and a fender-bender involving Leo Hofmeister and Homer Allen.
Four year old Richard LeRoy Witt, son of Mr and Mrs Lester A Witt, Monroe route 2, suffered a severe tongue cut requiring three stitches after falling from the back of a semi trailer at his grandparents farm home near Albany New York. The truck belonged to Hare’s trucking company and had Manuel Loeffel as driver. The injury occurred when he landed on a rock in the farm yard.
The United Brethren quadrennial conference voted 227 to 2 to merge with the Evangelical church and form the Evangelical United Brethren church. The union now requires ratification by 28 U. S. annual conferences and about 430,000 members. The Evangelical general conference has approved the union, awaiting its 275,000 members’ ratification.
Students in Monroe face exams class picnic and class day as the last week before summer. Seniors graduate Thursday and many plan summer college courses or work. Graduation also signals many entering armed service while teachers begin leaving Friday afternoon.
Namisaki Nakano, Procurator General, warned of peace agitation in Japan and urged arrest of speakers who threaten national unity. He said the war’s critical stage has increased such sentiment and stressed Japan must maintain internal unity to repel the enemy. Pfc John J Ault son of Ren Ault of Monroe has been liberated from a German prison camp and cabled to his father. He was captured December 24 1944 and entered service March 17 1943. He trained at Camp Bowie and Camp Hood Texas then went to Ft Benning Georgia and went overseas in May 1944 with a tank destroyer battalion.
President Truman outlined coordinated reconversion plans for the United States Britain and Canada to share industrial capacity equitably as war draws to a close. The lend-lease report covers through March 31 1945 detailing aid to Russia Britain China Africa and other regions and noting reductions in war production and continued aid to win victory over Japan.
