The Soviet Union sent an unmanned interplanetary craft Mars 2 toward Mars, aiming for a November arrival to study the planet and its environment. Tass says the five ton automatic station will examine solar plasma cosmic rays and radiation, with no firm landing plan disclosed.
The Agriculture Department announced a limited export sales program to ship surplus U S butter to Britain at reduced prices to ease a shortage and high prices. Britain has faced dwindling supplies due to drought affecting New Zealand and Australia shipments. Ogden Nash dies at 68 after kidney failure and a May 9 stroke.
The Senate rejects funding for the American SST amid debates over a billion-dollar price rise and environmental concerns. Fifty eight senators oppose subsidized production, while 37 backers argue federal support is needed to keep U S aviation leadership.
