Vandals Strike Monroe Over the Weekend

Weekend spree of property damage in Monroe includes shattered windows at Clark Gas Station and Phillips and Smith Furniture Store, a discarded bathtub on 16th Street, a stolen lawn ornament, broken glass and beer box near the high school, and a beer theft at Swiggum's Beer Depot. Police also recovered an abandoned blue bicycle in the 2600 block of 11th Avenue and are holding other items for claims.

Weekend traffic injuries hit Green County and Monroe

Six people were injured over the weekend in Green County traffic mishaps including a deer killed and three cows hurt. In Monroe six more crashes occurred with multiple injuries listed for drivers and passengers, plus vehicle and property damage.

Door Opened As Churchill Woods Apartments Dedication

Hundreds toured the new Churchill Woods Apartments north of 13th Avenue during the dedication ceremonies led by Mrs. Arthur P. Benkert who cut the ribbon. The 86 unit low cost housing in a wooded location near Twining Park serves nearly 100 seniors financed entirely with federal funds. Mayor Walter Ekum praised the project as the culmination of a dream and noted the 1965 study and 1966 Housing Authority creation with HUD support. James P. Walsh chaired the authority with commissioners Lester Johnson Harold Ambler Dr Keith Witte Wesley Dodge and Glen Schrier.

Outdoor Service At Kubly Park Cancelled By Cold

The first planned service of the Church of the Outdoors at Kubly Park north of Monroe on County Trunk N was cancelled due to damp chilly weather. It may occur next Sunday. Rev. Wiley Fulton and the First Baptist Church led the event with Argus 4-H Club families attending. Kubly Park is an Argus Club project on land donated by Alvin A. Kubly.

Wisconsin Governor Seeks Restoration Of College Funds

Gov. Warren Knowles, praising Wisconsin finances as better than many states, urged lawmakers to restore college funds cut by the Joint Finance Committee. He cautioned the next biennium remains manageable despite a prior $25.9 million deficit and a potential $400 million revenue gap.

Voting Begins In the County Queen Contest

Voting began today for Green County Dairy Queen. Mrs. Ernest Wegmueller, county queen chairman, said one ballot is issued for each dairy product purchase of 20 cents or more, allowing multiple votes equal to the number of purchases. Ballots available from milkmen, grocers, meat markets, and cheese factories. Cast ballots in the town of purchase.

Auto Workers Back on Job At GM Chevrolet Plant

About 5,360 United Auto Workers members at the Janesville Chevrolet plant will return to work after a strike settlement was approved by local UAW members. The pact, reached by negotiators, ends a six-plant walkout and yields a phased return to normal shifts by evening.

Conductor Kenneth Krattiger Guest at Monroe Band Concert

Monticello band director Kenneth Krattiger will guest conduct tomorrow night at Monroe High School auditorium. The 8th Grade Band led by Pat Barnard opens with the Star Spangled Banner, then Irish rhapsody and Die Fledermaus Overture before presenting Frere Jacques march conducted by Krattiger. Donations to the Badger Camp Fund will be collected.

Poppy Day Observed For Veterans Help In May

Monroe Juda Browntown and South Wayne residents are asked to contribute to veterans hospitals on Friday May 23 during the annual Poppy Day. The event is led by the Auxiliary to Zilmer Riley Post 84 with co chairs Mmes Ira Morrell Robert Hardell and Kenneth W Stuart. Volunteers will cover the square surrounding businesses and industry while poppies are handmade by veterans in Minnesota Hospitals to provide funds for veteran care families and scholarships.

Monroe Woman's Club Hosts Dual Drama Night at High School

A near capacity crowd enjoyed two short plays and an intermission feature by the Monroe Woman's Club Drama Department in Monroe High School. Directors Mrs. James Hendrickson and Mrs. John Norton received ovations for guiding the productions. A goodwill offering funded props and urged wider participation in makeup, lighting, and staging for a future Little Theater group in Monroe.
