A new city wide committee urges expanded Civil Defense and tornado alarms for schools. They want two or more booster sirens in hard to hear areas and new transistor radios for firemen and schools to receive alerts during severe weather.
Warren Croake 70 of Albany died at 10 10 last night in St Clare hospital after a period of failing health. He was a World War I veteran, native of the rural Albany area, son of Michael and Carrie Peebles e. Surviving are sister Mrs Colonel Dixon Albany and brother Hart M Crooke Daytona Beach Fla. The brother plans to arrive mid afternoon with confirmed airplane reservations. Sharer funeral home Albany is in charge of arrangements.
Monroe’s John F. Kundert was named state Jaycee treasurer at the annual meeting in Eau Claire. The Monroe chapter also saw Tom Kerr receive the divisional Giessenbier award for outstanding small chapter activity. Delegates from Monroe included John Kundert Kerr Nack and Delbert Krupke.
Harry Hofmaster 72 native of Jordan Township died yesterday at Mt. Horeb nursing home from a heart attack. Services set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Shriner-Neu shwander funeral home with burial in Greenwood cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. tomorrow. He was son of Gottlieb and Fannie Hofmaster. never married. survived by five brothers Ben Houston Tex Charles Argyle Sam John Belleville. Matt Horeb. one sister Mrs Oscar Ayen Blanchardville. one deceased brother William.
Gov. Nelson appointed Madison attorney John K. Kyle to a six year term as director of the State Department of Securities. Kyle succeeds Edward J. Lamp of Madison, whose term expired May 1.
Rueben Rube Noble of Shullsburg died unexpectedly at the Shullsburg hotel at age 65. A famed spitball pitcher, he played semi pro in Wisconsin for La Crosse Merrill and Menasha, and professionally in Dubuque and Louisiana. He coached many young players and lived previously in Monroe. He is survived by two brothers How ard and Ralph, a sister Agnes Klein, six grandchildren, and his daughter Mrs Stephen Pandow. He served in World War I and was born October 10 1895 in Gratiot. He married Maelene Knowlton in 1925. she died in 1945. Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at O'Flaherty funeral home, Shullsburg.
Five charter members of Monroe Kiwanis Club will be honored at the 40th anniversary dinner in the high school M Room at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Honorees are Walter Bauman Fred L Kohli Laroy Dodge Roy G Rottler and Dr L A Moore. Wives and visitors will attend and Prof Glen Pound of Madison will speak.
Dairy farmers from 17 southern Wisconsin counties including Green met in Madison to seek a federal milk marketing order. Lyman McKee, president of the Madison Milk Producers Cooperative, spoke in support at a public hearing. The groups requested a federal hearing to set minimum farm prices for milk.
In Alabama, a fire bomb destroyed a bus and members of the interracial Freedom Riders group were beaten as they tested racial barriers. Thirteen people were hospitalized after attacks in Anniston and Birmingham by a mob of white men. no arrests were reported.
Palm Beach reports signal a Kennedy Khrushchev conference on cold war issues may occur soon. Laos and a test ban loom as hurdles while talks hinge on progress. Kennedy may visit De Gaulle in May and meet Khrushchev in Stockholm or Vienna if talks advance. Public aides note no current plans.
Milwaukee assistant city attorney Stanley M. Hebert was appointed to a six year term on the Wisconsin State Public Service Commission. Governor Nelson said the post is the highest ever awarded to a Negro in the state. Hebert succeeds Martin Glaeser and will begin after Senate confirmation. Nelson also reappointed Leonard Bessman of Milwaukee as chairman of the three member panel.
A career exploration program for youths 15 and older will run Saturday from 9 30 a m to 12 noon at the county agricultural building with George Gramling 4 H club agent announcing it. UW speakers Viola Hunt and George Sledge will address what I am like and growing work force followed by area interest groups in farming, conservation, business, education and more led by local professionals and university staff.

Rev. Paul Croke, 53, longtime priest of St. Rose Cuba City and St. Patrick Albany, died in his sleep at his Muscoda cottage after heart attack convalescence. Born Milwaukee 1907, he was ordained 1934, served in Navy chaplaincy in the Pacific, and held posts in Brodhead Mineral Point and Cuba City. Services set for 11 am Wednesday with office of the dead at 10:30 am. burial in Milwaukee's St. Mary's Cemetery. A confirmation class at St. Rose was rescheduled to 8 pm May 23.
Geneva United States moves to join international Laos talks after President Kennedy approves a concession that lets all three Laotian factions attend as observers without calling them representatives. The shift aims to resolve who may speak for Laos in negotiations on its political future.

A teenager's convertible left a highway, broke a fence, and struck a grassy play area outside Wind Lake, killing Frank G. Berg Jr., 5, and injuring his sister Deborah, 4. Driver Dennis Kopp, 18, Milwaukee, held without charge as Wisconsin highway toll rose to 263 for 1961.

Tornadoes and strong winds hit Wisconsin's midsection causing property damage from La Crosse west of the state to Winnebago and Calumet Counties. A 7 year old boy suffered bruises when a barn collapsed. one farmer, Henry Knapp, and neighbor boy Tom Bessell were involved as a barn fell during the effort to reach safety. Fields and barns suffered, shelters and garages damaged, and several counties reported damaged roofs, barns, and outbuildings.
Cambridge and Middlesex County were shaken as two fugitives Edgar W. Cook and Norman Porter shot the jail warden David Robinson to escape Middlesex County Jail. Cook, 48, Brookline, faces murder charges in the Cambridge Patrolman Gorman case while Porter, 21, of Woburn, is charged with killing clerk John Piggott during an attempted robbery. Porter was being escorted to his cell when he produced a gun.
