State patrol issues 131 five day warnings for defective equipment

State highway patrol checked 486 cars on the south square and at the high school. Officers and inspectors found 131 five day warnings for defective safety equipment after three hours in the morning and two and a half hours in the afternoon. Major defects included 55 stop lights and 42 directional lights.

A U S official confirms survivors of the Cuba invasion were kept on a Caribbean island before being moved to the U S mainland. The last evacuees left Vieques Island on May 2 as part of a military fiasco at Cochinas Bay where 1,200 invaders faced 30,000 Cuban troops. Some survivors were reportedly in Miami days later.

Student Nurse Killed In Door County Crash

A student nurse, Audrey Ostram, 19, of Sturgeon Bay, was killed when the car she rode in left the road at a curve near Brussels at the intersection of highways 57 and H. Driver Darlene Hembel, 20, and Judith E. Martins on, 19, both of Sturgeon Bay, were injured. Ostram and Martins on were trainees at a Milwaukee hospital. Hembel is in nurse training in Two Rivers. Wisconsin highway fatalities for 1961 reached 257.

Swiss Diver Keller Aims for 3000 Feet With Secret Gas Formula

Hannes Keller, 26, a Swiss mathematician diver, announced at the U S Navy Experimental Diving Unit that he can descend to 1000 feet using a secret gas breathing formula. He envisions 3000 feet as a future goal and notes risks to amateurs if the method spreads. Keller has exceeded prior depth records and performed a 48 minute bounce dive near Toulon.

Campers Ready To Invade Wisconsin Parks

Three people said Kemp the 72 year old man who died with over $18 000 in savings resembled their brother Albert Klemp who they last saw in 1933 but they could not sign a positive identification. Kemp lived frugally in a Milwaukee room for 25 years and may have been fingerprinted as an alien with prints on file in Washington.

Gary Cooper in Critical Fight With Cancer

Hollywood star Gary Cooper, gravely ill with cancer, has been given the last rites of the Catholic Church. A family spokesman said Cooper received extreme unction Friday afternoon from Rev.
