Three Die in Thunderstorm Head-On Crash West of Freeport
A head on collision on U S Highway 20 near Esquire Curve four miles west of Freeport killed Richard C. Schmidt 22 and his wife Dianne 19 and Louise Northrup 25 of Waterloo Ia. Northrup was en route to Rockford to catch a plane for Germany to join her Army husband. Northrup's dog also perished in the crash.

Eleanor Kaatz an 18 year old high school student died at St Marys hospital after being stabbed more than 50 times by Terry Caspersen a 21 year old former mental patient. Caspersen was arrested after Miss Kaatz identified his photo and faces a preliminary hearing.

Woman Eludes Freeport Hunt Over Missing Newborn
Police said a woman resembling the abductor sketch slipped through a blockade in Freeport while being questioned about the kidnapped Paul Joseph Fronczak. The Chicago infant was taken on April 27 from Dora Fronczak at Michael Reese Hospital by a woman posing as a nurse. The ransom suspect in this case remains at large.
