President Nixon asked state governors to the White House to discuss campus unrest and Southeast Asia as student strikes and protests continued after a massive weekend demonstration in Washington. Antiwar leaders urged ongoing protest against U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia.
The State Medical Society executive council heard that UW sponsored blue bus mobile clinics revealed many VC cases in Madison teens. Dr. Frank Weston of Madison said most cases involved non students aged 18 to 20 lacking access to regular UW facilities.
Washington AP reports a friendly Senate expects easy path for Judge Harry A. Blackmun's Supreme Court nomination with Mansfield signaling possible confirmation, while delaying vote until Tuesday. AP notes Mansfield’s stance though no contrary evidence has emerged. CHICAGO AP says investigators plan to probe fatal apartment fire that killed nine and left 40 homeless, as fire destroyed two staircases trapping residents on upper floors.
A high Cambodian official flew from Phnom Penh to the U S 2nd Field Force outside Saigon to establish liaison with American officials in South Vietnam and exchange intelligence information. The 2nd Field Force directs most U S operations in Cambodia.
Firemen from Milwaukee's North Shore suburbs battled an extra alarm blaze for nearly four hours, starting shortly after 4 a.m. Extensive damage hit about nine stores in a large shopping center, with Kroger, a liquor store, a drug store and two pint stores among the heavily damaged.
Antiwar demonstrators at the University of Wisconsin and other state schools pledge ongoing disruption as guardsmen patrol campuses. About 1,000 students rally, form groups to disrupt classes, and call for actions against the draft. Universities plan to continue instruction with discussions on Vietnam Cambodia issues and postponed activities.
Grant Larned executive director of the Wisconsin Heart Association since 1949 will retire August 15 for health reasons at age 64. He recently resigned from the Advisory Council for Comprehensive Health Planning and helped form the North Central Region of the American Heart Association. Over 21 years Wisconsin contributions neared ten million dollars with 4.711 million for cardiovascular research.
AP reports Hanoi directs a war of liberation in Cambodia to counter allied advances in Vietnam. Captured Cambodian documents outline recruitment, guerrilla mobilization, and consolidating liberated zones to sustain the antiwar effort and topple Lon Nol.
A South Vietnamese naval flotilla of about 30 boats with US advisers sailed into Phnom Penh after a border river assault. The move coincided with Marine gains along the Mekong, seizing Neak Luong ferry crossing and linking with Cambodian strike forces. Reports say 200 enemy troops killed and the area near Highway 1 secured.
Wisconsin toll rose to 332 for 1970 with seven weekend fatalities. John Spohn, 22, of Wisconsin Rapids died after a tree impact on a Wood County road. Robert Hass, 31, of La Crosse overturned near a La Crosse County highway. Donald E. Nelson, 35, of East Troy died in a head on crash north of Mudonago. Lee C. Fronforst, 20, of Mishicot fatally injured on Highway 151 near Manitowoc. Michael Marlette, 17, of New Auburn killed beside a Chippewa County highway. Roscoe Lefler, 55, of Two Rivers died in a three car crash in Waupaca County. Donald L. Loss, 22, of Chicago perished in a motorcycle crash near Lake Geneva.
Green County seeks nominators for a King and Queen from residents aged 60 or older who are grandparents. Nominations must be sent by May 19 20 to Mrs Allan Barnard Monroe Wisconsin 53566 with name address and qualifications. Governor’s Grandparents Day caps the event in Milwaukee July 26.
Walter P. Reuther the UAW president since 1946 and a key AFL-CIO figure died in a Learjet crash with five others near Pelston Michigan. The loss shocks the union as it faces July contract talks with GM Ford and Chrysler and contemplates future leadership.
