Reserve forces plan to cut Guard divisions and Army brigades
A committee of regular Army, National Guard and Reserve generals voted 11 to 10 for a plan to drop 15 National Guard divisions and four Reserve brigades. The proposal aims to shift combat units to the National Guard and service support to the Reserve, reducing the Guard to eight divisions and 18 independent brigades. Officials say most personnel would move into first line units, with about 42 brigades needed to handle internal issues. The plan awaits review by Gen Harold K Johnson and Secretary Stan Resor before McNamara approval amid expected congressional opposition.
