AP News In Brief reports street demonstrations in Washington fade after clashes with police and military power. Thousands are arrested as organizers vow continued action to end the war, despite arrests and a strengthened government response. Rennie Davis promises further protests.
Carl T. Rowan says Nixon administration failures have caused a civil rights downturn with voter frustration among college-age Blacks. He cites political backlash and fading White House leadership as slowing activism, but predicts renewed Black activism later.
President Nixon hosts a pastoral Salute to Agriculture at the White House with livestock grazing on the lawn and farm equipment displayed. A photo captioned Hogs are Beautiful accompanies the event while 70 agricultural leaders gather to discuss farm policy in the executive mansion.
AP reports U S Steel leads a wave pushing prices up more than six percent. Jones and Laughlin, Republic, and Armco followed with six percent increases. Wheeling-Pittsburgh announced new pricing plans while Bethlehem Steel held back from the trend.
Washington AP Rev Carl McIntire and his Bible carrying followers plan a song service on the Capitol steps tonight to warm up for Saturday march to the Washington Monument. This McIntire sponsored event follows three weeks of antiwar demonstrations. He aims to arrange radio transmission of messages from Chiang Kai shek and other Far East anti Communist leaders to the Washington Monument gathering.
On Monday May 3 the dose for 3 year old Philip Schulz Jr in rural Brooklyn was adjusted to every three days to continue fighting his malignant condition. He remains an outpatient at University Hospitals with weight loss back and neck pain and reduced appetite. The family receives many cards and messages from concerned neighbors.
Leroy Luberg dean of public services at the University of Wisconsin addressed the Founders Day Dinner of the UW Alumni Club of Green County at New Glarus Hotel. Officers were elected Howard Voegels new president and retiring president Robert H. Richardson.
Green County joined the Wisconsin Blackhawk Country tourism association at a Wednesday night meeting in Dodgeville. Guest speaker Burton Loken, director of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, highlighted state tourism impact citing 1.7 billion annual income and 20 percent of state jobs tied to tourism. He noted Old Abe’s 1876 exhibit, TV advertising potential, and the push for off season winter activities and snowmobile integration.
U S fighter bombers fought antiaircraft guns 40 miles north of the DMZ destroying three long range guns in the 33rd strike this year. A Phantom was shot down farther south in the Laos panhandle but both crewmen were saved. The campaign targets the Ho Chi Minh trail and follows the U S withdrawal of Marine units as part of a 100000 man cutback. Seven Americans killed and nearly 100 wounded in ongoing fighting near Trang Bang and Saigon suburbs.
Elmer J Erickson 74 longtime Argyle businessman and funeral home partner died at 5 a m Friday May 7 at University Hospitals Madison from a heart condition He had lived in Argyle since 1949 and retired in 1953 He was honored for 50 years in the funeral business and leaves widow Ella a daughter Gladyce Campbell three sons Myron Truman and Doral one sister and 12 grandchildren Funeral services set for 2 p m Monday May 10 at Argyle Lutheran Church burial Woodlawn Cemetery
A preview tour of the completed addition to St. Clare Hospital will be held during National Hospital Week May 9-15. The first three floors, worth eight million dollars, will be open to employees, the 244 member Hospital Auxiliary, area physicians and media, with public tours planned for Sept. 1 and a full dedication in spring 1972.
Brodhead will host the State Line League Band Festival on Saturday May 8 drawing 800 students from 11 area schools. Seventeen bands perform 8 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. with a 3 45 parade downtown and judging at school sites. Admission is 50 cents for programs and a Brodhead Music Boosters cafeteria operates on site.
