A tornado tore a quarter mile wide swath through Joplin injuring at least 46 and killing one man. It damaged 37 blocks, halted traffic, and left the city dark as National Guardsmen were deployed to deter looting and arrests were reported.
New York AP reports makers of colored tissues say sales remain strong despite claims dyes in products harm the environment. The dye controversy arose a year ago after publications listed pollution survival steps, including a boycott of colored tissue items like toilet paper facial tissues towels and napkins. Ecology groups argue dyes cannot be assimilated by waste treatment systems.
Five youths from the Monroe area were apprehended on highway 59 near Monroe by the Green County Sheriff's team after Brodhead Police alerted the sheriff's department. They were seen removing merchandise from the Factory Outlet Store in Brodhead and were picked up with items about 20 minutes later. They were released to their parents.

Grace M Hefty Thorpe, 77, former county welfare official and register of deeds, died May 5 at Pleasant View Nursing Home after cerebral hemorrhages. Born in Monroe, she served 27 years in county posts, retired 1960. Survived by son, three daughters, eight grandchildren, one great, and siblings. Funeral May 7 at St Victor’s Church with burial Calvary Cemetery.
