Janet Jennings Angel of the Seneca and WWI nurse

Janet Jennings a renowned Civil and Spanish War nurse and writer received a signed scroll and the unofficial title Angel of the Seneca aboard the transport ship Seneca off Fortress Monroe in 1898. Her later life included books The Blue and the Gray Abraham Lincoln the Greatest American civic work and a Lincoln plaque at Lincoln school. She died December 31 1917 in Washington after a July stroke and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery with a government marker.

Wisconsin moves to tax sales 2 percent levy faces GOP support

A Wisconsin bill proposes a 2 percent state sales tax and tax relief reversals aiming to raise 135 million dollars for 1961 62. Sponsor Assemblyman Glen Pommerening says the plan would also hike income taxes and repeal personal property taxes as budget debates heat up. The measure appears amid a partisan fight over faculty raises at the UW and nine state colleges with budget amendments from both parties.

Watershed Plan To Be Discussed In Area Thursday

Farmers and conservation officials plan a 6 30 p m meeting at the old New Glarus high school to discuss a Public Law 566 flood control project along the Little Sugar River. The plan would add flood control structures and stress land use with input from Swiss Valleys and Little Sugar River groups.

Hospital Week Reveals New Equipment At St. Clare

St. Clare hospital observes National Hospital Week amid rising patient census. March averaged 124 daily patients with 20.5 daily admissions, above 1960 figures. Major purchases include an $18,000 automatic X-ray developing machine, a $5,000 operating table, a $3,450 premature nursery, $725 electrical line, $2,940 laundry, and a $1,675 laundry hood. Queen Doris Mother of Twin Princesses To Attend Dairy Day

Mrs. Paul T. Nelson former Doris Olsen of Brooklyn Wisconsin gave birth to twin daughters at Wisconsin General Hospital Madison. She is the only Green County girl to hold the Alice title and will join the queen’s party at the June Dairy Day festival in Monroe. The Nelsons have four daughters Sheri Lori and the twins. Dayton Robbery Warrants Issued

Sheriff A Charles Howe traveled to Milwaukee to serve warrants on two men held by Milwaukee police for the armed robbery of Woody’s Den in Dayton early Tuesday. Richard Comstock and Bert Anderson are identified suspects with a third unverified man. Comstock recently released from Green Bay reformatory.

Frito firm arranges $6 million loan

The Frito Co. of Dallas has arranged a $6,000,000 loan from Equitable Life Assurance Society at 5 percent, final maturity 1981, to bolster working capital and retire a six year bank loan from 1958 used to modernize and expand plant facilities, announced executive vice president Fladger F. Tannery.
