Cancer Drive For the City Nets $1,894.57

A total of $1,894.57 was collected in April Cancer Month residential solicitations in Monroe. Ward receipts ranged from $110.46 to $318.10, with $180 in memorial gifts. Memorials honored Charles Buehler Sr. and Stella Adams among others, with nine organizational donations.

Knowles Pushes $200 Million Wisconsin Water Pollution Plan

Gov. Knowles urged the Wisconsin Legislature to launch a $200 million war on water pollution through bonding to aid localities. The plan would fund lake and stream cleanup with the state covering about $88 million in interest over 28 years, offering counties and districts two funding options. The governor hailed it as Wisconsin’s most far reaching anti pollution program.

Polls Open For Voting On School Referendum

Polls open at 7 a.m. in the Monroe Junior High School lobby for a $850,000 school referendum. Any resident over 21 who has lived in Wisconsin 12 months and in the precinct 10 days may vote tomorrow 8 p.m. Voters from Monroe, Browntown, Monroe and Clarno areas plus parts of Adams, Cadiz, Jefferson, Jordan, Mt. Pleasant, Sylvester and Washington are eligible with no pre registration.

Two Cuban Quads Stricken in Havana Deaths Reported

Miami reports say two of the quadruplets born to Cira Garcia aged 30 in Havana died Wednesday night at Calixio Garcia Hospital. The mother and the remaining two babies, a boy and a girl, are reported to be well. Father Jose Marcos, 39, is a farm worker. the couple has three other children.

Tragedy in Rockford: 12-Year-Old Bicyclist Fatally Struck

A 12 year old boy, Frank Dietz Jr., was killed when he was struck by a car while bicycling in North Park Rockford Illinois. The driver, 17 year old Frank Ambrose, was not charged. Both youths resided in North Park, a community north of Rockford.
