Fire Burns Fritz Wenger In Formica Glue Flash Fire

An accidental flash fire at the Gaylord D. Swenson home on 16th Avenue left Fritz Wenger with severe burns and the family dog fatally singed. Wenger kicked a flaming glue pail toward the door, saving the interior. fire officials praised his quick actions. The incident caused exterior damage and one smoke-filled wing, with fire from the highly inflammable glue. Other details note the Monroe Museum open house schedule starting May 4 and a vehicle collision in the Kroger lot causing moderate damage.

Monroe High 1969 Junior Prom in Moscow Skyline Theme

Monroe High School transformed its gym into a Moscow skyline prom set with onion domes and a blue ceiling. Harry McGuire crowned king and Ginny Bacon queen as dances ran 9 p.m. to midnight. Post Prom banquet and theater trip followed, ending with a 3:30 a.m. show and morning breakfast.

A special 8 p.m. Monday May 5 session at the Woodford Methodist Church Basement will discuss plans for Blackhawk Park and spur local interest. County board members and Lafayette County resource agent Lyle Atkinson will attend. Also updated is the critical condition of Mrs. William Haag 42 after a fall from a truck at the farm home.

Blackhawk High exhibits works by Mrs Hetzel students

Blackhawk High School hosts an art exhibit on Wednesday May 7 from 6 to 10 p.m. featuring paintings sculptures wall hangings wood cuts and mobiles with about 34 exhibitors led by senior Deb Phillips. Items for sale include painted milk cans and crystalized bottles.

Antique Show Ends Tomorrow At Turner Hall In Monroe

The Monroe Kiwanis 14th annual Antique Show and Sale at Turner Hall wraps up at 6 p.m. tomorrow. A program on Antiques will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday May 6 in the Ag Building with Marilyn Stuckey of WEKZ presenting a discussion on Antiques in Your Home. Historic sites along The Mississippi River avoided flood damage and opened on schedule May 1. Villa Louis and local museums remained accessible as flood waters receded. Mushroom hunters anticipate a good harvest this season with favorable moisture and warmer days. A 6 cent Grandma Moses commemorative stamp went on sale in Washington May 1. The stamp features a detail from July Fourth painted in 1951 and hangs in the White House.

Spring Banquet Honors Five Retiring Monroe Teachers

The Monroe Education Association will host a Spring Banquet Monday May 5 at 6 30 p.m. in the Monroe Senior High School gym honoring five retiring teachers Mrs Herbert Lenoir Ainsworth Mrs Nell Cunningham Mrs Bessie Houser Miss Hazel Huffman and Mrs Alice Livingstone The event includes a program led by co chairmen Ruth Dobson and Virginia Kramer with members of the school board as guests and uses 1969 Junior Prom decorations for the setting.

May Fellowship Day heard Sister Blandine on AA history

About 200 area women attended the May Fellowship Day at Zion United Methodist Church in Juda to hear Sister M. Blandine Fond du Lac speak on Alcoholics Anonymous. She traced AA’s history from 1935 and emphasized removing stigma, clergy support, and AA as a spiritual program open to all. The talk noted treatment steps and the need for public understanding, stressing AA’s role in sober living.
