Nancy, Lady Astor, Virginia belle who became the first female MP in Britain, died at Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire. Born in Greenwood, Virginia, she married twice first to Robert Gould Shaw then to Waldorf Astor, who served in the Commons before rising to the Lords.
In Lansing police detained Charles P. English 37 of Bogotá Colombia a Florida politician by voice and placed him on a 48 hour psychiatric hold after he entered Gov George W Romney's inner office with a loaded pistol in his attache case and a folding knife in his pocket. State Police guard Jay Kennedy restrained him.
In observance of Loyalty Day, the VFW led flag raising and lowering at the Courthouse. Lowering at 5 p.m. featured Walter Laeser, Fred Felder, Ernest Marty, and Ralph Schroeder with Sam Pickett and Fred Flick. other VFW members and Auxiliary officers attended.
Madison The State Insurance Department is asked by Gov. John W. Reynolds to study an insurance plan to shield dairy farmers from losses after the Owen Dairy Co cheese plant closed. He favors options with private or state handling and will convene farm leaders to discuss. The shutdown left about 320 farmers owed roughly 300000 dollars.
Dallas voters participated in a Texas primary highlighting a GOP presidential poll. The vote covered statewide contests with a U S Senate race between Jack Cox and George Bush and Robert Morris with Milton Davis. Democratic races focused on Governor John Connally and challenger Don Yarborough amid Kennedy era concerns.
Shelby Jean Mauermann, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harvey Mauermann, rural Brodhead, was one of three outstanding seniors honored by the University of Wisconsin in a recognition ceremony. She shared honors in home economics with Joan Schurch and Joan Cleson of Palmyra was named top senior in agriculture. Mauermann was a 1963 finalist in Alice in Dairyland.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court accepted two official reapportionment proposals from Gov. John W. Reynolds as it continues realigning Senate and Assembly districts. The dispute centers on Milwaukee County’s Assembly seats with 24 currently and questions whether 25 or 26 seats should stand. The court may choose a plan if the Legislature and governor fail to agree by May 1, with May 15 as a fallback.
Jerome and Mrs Howe are named judges for Family Fun Night waltz contest in the Polynesian Sunset setting at the high school gym. Lions Club and City Band sponsor a show with past Minstrel soloists including Dr Robert Smith performing Shimmy Like My Sister Kate. Prizes every five minutes. Proceeds finance civic projects. Backdrop features swaying palms and a smoking volcano. Walter Babula oversees refreshments with hot dogs and soda. Civil Defense Auxiliary Police with Ervin and Edwin Goecks present.
Patrolman Edward V. Schrempf and officer Cornelius Blackshear stopped a car in Brooklyn. The driver sped away dragging Schrempf for blocks and killing him. A passenger, Adrian Valentine, 20, Brooklyn, died after the car crashed into a bus. Driver Oscar Vazquez, 92, Brooklyn, charged with vehicular homicide and DWI.
Net operating revenues at Wisconsin Public Service Corp. totaled $18 million for the quarter ended March 31, down slightly from $18.1 million a year earlier. Net income was $2.53 million, versus $2.58 million in 1963.

The Wisconsin Board of Health adopts a new code requiring nursing homes to have nurses on duty. The code effective July 1 applies to homes for the aged and mandates fire sprinkler systems by July 1, 1969 for non fire resistant buildings. Hearings were held in Milwaukee Eau Claire and Green Bay.
The WWII aircraft carrier Card, famed for seven U‑boat kills, was sunk by a pre dawn blast in the Saigon River. Divers found an external hole, with authorities weighing external sabotage or internal fault as causes. 73 civilian crew escaped before pumps fought flooding and tide buoyed the vessel briefly.
Four county officials announce bids for re-election at Fall polls. Mrs Helen F raizke register of deeds Ralph J Kundert treasurer Ray E Kundert county clerk and Mrs Helen F Myers clerk of court seek another term. Sheriff W E Deininger has already stated he will seek re-election. District Attorney Joseph D Viney will not run again.
