Bike Safety Campaign Emphasized by Monroe Police

Monroe Police Chief Dwight Coplien urged safe cycling ahead of summer crowds. He cited American Bike Month and announced a Saturday bicycle licensing at City Hall from 8 am to noon. The chief shared Bicycle Institute of America rules covering lights, signals, right of way, and pedestrian safety.

Antique Show Opens With Grunewalds At Monroe Hall

Mrs and Mrs Harold H Grunewald of Elkhorn manage the 14th annual Monroe Kiwanis Antique Show at Turner Hall starting 11 a.m. tomorrow. They run a long established Elkhorn shop focusing on glass china and lamps. Rose Brennan of Brennan’s Antiques brings a rare $2000 Webbs Burmese epergne. Cleverings of Clevering Antiques cancel due to illness. Bennington’s Antiques of Center Point Iowa will fill 19 booths at the Monroe show.

The Green County Association for Retarded Children will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday May 5 in the Green County Special Education Building at p.m. A film Genetic Curriculum will be shown illustrating a curriculum for use by teachers of special education classes.

UAW spokesmen reported no satisfactory progress with General Motors on walkouts that idled about 50,000 workers. Talks resumed Thursday morning to halt the strikes affecting six GM plants across four states, including Janesville where UAW Local 95 represents about 5,360 workers.

Monroe Doctors Probe Nickel Allergy Behind Pierced Earlobes

University of Wisconsin dermatologist Dr. Robert R. Baumann and Dr. Thomas L. Watt of Monroe Clinic studied 17 women who developed nickel allergy after ear piercing. They found swollen draining earlobes often misdiagnosed as bacterial infection and noted strong positive nickel sulfate patch tests. Nickel sensitivity tied to the pierced earring fashion is an important concern.

Speaking Event Slated Tonight in Green County

The Green County Conservation Speaking Contest takes place tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Green County Soil Meeting room with 12 students from five area schools presenting speeches for cash prizes and a state berth. Winners will be judged tonight and the top two advance to the state contest. the first three receive prizes of 25, 15, and a third prize. The speeches will feed into Culmination Day programs in May. Participants include Kathy Krahenbuhl and John Brand from Monroe Elementary, Julia Sarbacker and Laura Heinsohn from Albany, Robert Wahl and Kathy Bernet from New Glarus, Julia Flannery and Sheryl Rufenacht from Juda, Gregg Keen and Carla Salzwedel from Monticello, with Russell Quinn from Albany, Neale Scott from Juda, and Thomas Daly from Monticello as organizers.

Monticello volunteers plan a public euchre party at the Fire House on May 3 to start a fundraiser for a replacement rescue truck. The old truck has 15 years of service and 100000 miles, a supplement to three current engines.

Monroe High Band Concert Delights Local Audience

A large crowd attended the Monroe High School band and Chamber Choir concert at the Junior High School auditorium. Soloists and student guest conductors earned heavy applause as funds from the event support music scholarships and purchase of instruments shared by Mt. Pleasant, Washington Townships, and Monticello Village. The Monticello and Monroe departments also highlighted their equipment and commendations, including a thank you from Monroe Fire Chief Benkert to Monticello for saving two barns.

Horsehair Appeals To Birds at Clarno

Birds cleaned up pony hair after school as Bonnie and Shirley Lehman left the winter coat on the ground. Sparrows robins meadow larks black birds and turtle doves gathered the hair for nests and by noon the next day no trace remained.

Green County Society elects seven to Cancer Society board

Seven new members join the Board of Directors of the Green County Wisconsin Division American Cancer Society at Monroe during a quarterly meeting. New high school student members from Juda Monroe New Glarus join the board along with veteran workers and two physicians. An April Crusade fund drive update is given with plans for a May 13 evaluation dinner at Marco's in Monroe.

Over 300 Calvary Bible College Students Stage Campus Demonstration

In Kansas City AP reports more than 390 students walked out and spent the day improving the campus. Armed with rakes shovels lawnmowers and wheelbarrows they mowed grass raked leaves pruned shrubs washed windows and built a gravel side walk. They even washed parked cars.

Mrs Haag Injured After Farm Truck Fall

A fall from a truck at a Mt. Horeb area farm home yesterday afternoon left Mrs. William Haag 42 in Route 2 Mt. Horeb with head injuries and multiple contusions. She was taken to St. Clare Hospital by ambulance at 6:55 p.m. and listed in fair condition today.

Local Writers Set For Ripon Meeting

The Spring Conference of the Wisconsin Regional Writers Association will be held at Ripon College in Ripon on Sunday May 4. Green County members will attend and the program will include talks by journalists and authors.
