Baraboo eyed for giant atom smasher site

Wisconsin moves to win a $300 million high energy atom smasher project with Baraboo’s 5000 acre former ordnance site under study. MURA officials say Baraboo meets key needs including water power geology airport university proximity and labor while Stoughton remains a rival option.

Mrs. Ben H. Roderick Dies in Brodhead at 80

Mrs. Ben H. Roderick 80 a longtime Brodhead club leader and state president of multiple groups died Saturday at St. Clare Hospital after influenza and pneumonia complications. She helped fund Brodhead’s memorial library and held numerous civic posts including Wisconsin Music Club Federation treasurer and president. Burial is slated at Greenwood Cemetery with services tomorrow at Newcomer Funeral Home Brodhead.

Lutherans Plan New Church in Brodhead

Bethlehem Lutheran Church members vote unanimously to build a brick church between Fourth and Fifth streets near Highway 104 on the Rock Green County line. Construction starts June 1 with a $130,000 project cost. Architects are Steffan and Kemp of Wauwatosa. Rev. Lowell H. Mays pastor.

Plans Career in Teaching Thomas Hefty Winner of $1,000 Thorp Grant

Two Wisconsin high school seniors Thomas R. Hefty of Monticello High School and John Edward Martin of Milwaukee's St. John Cathedral High School won $1,000 Thorp Finance Foundation scholarships. Hefty plans to study education at the University of Wisconsin. Martin will study engineering. Awards will be presented April 22 at Thorp Finance Corp offices.

Mrs. Pulkrabek Succumbs at 50 in Monroe

Mrs. George M. Pulkrabek aged 50 of 1919 10th Street died at 7 55 p m after a nine month malignancy illness. Born Helen Florence Ross in Stockton Illinois she lived in Stockton Galena Hutchinson and Plymouth before moving to Monroe in 1949. She was a clerk at Etter's store and a member of Immanuel EUB Church Eastern Star and the Monroe Woman's Club. Surviving: husband George M Pulkrabek daughter Mrs Richard Awe two sons Larry and Richard two brothers John Ross Wilkinson Ross three sisters Mrs Cecil Dewey Mrs Rose Patterson and Mrs Joseph Laack and two grandchildren. Burial will be in Mt Auburn Cemetery Glencoe Minnesota with services at Immanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church conducted by Rev Melvin Roehrdanz. Eastern Star services at the funeral home tonight.

County Hospital Lifts Visitation Ban After Flu Epidemic

Amos Johnson superintendent of Green County Hospital announced restrictions on visiting have been lifted. Friends and relatives may visit patients daily from 2 to 4 p.m., including Sundays and holidays, as the flu epidemic has ended. Johnson thanked cooperators who observed the ban to protect patients and visitors.

Madison Wisconsin cheddar market shows unchanged prices with fair to good demand. Supplies of current styles are ample though distribution varies. blocks range about 36 to 40 dollars for 40 pound blocks, with variations for single daisies longhorns and midgets in the 39 to 41 cent per pound area.

Chile quakes devastate villages. dam bursts in El Cobre

A massive earthquake shattered central Chile destroying El Cobre village and burying it under two million tons of mud and water. At least 26 people died elsewhere. hundreds injured and thousands homeless. President Frei toured the affected zones and praised rescue efforts as aftershocks and rockslides complicated relief.
