Madison assembly approved a 71-A bill doubling the deer shining fine to 100 to 200 dollars and adding a 10 day to six month jail sentence. The measure passed 95 to 0 and now goes to the Senate.
Monroe Red Cross canvass under Rev. Richard F. Hulbur t collected 1668.68 with more pledges expected as books close. County receipts total 1058 from five townships reported. A neighborhood basketball game added 2.32 to Red Cross funds with players including Marshall Zwygart Roger Brunkow and Jim Kittelsen among participants.
A Lions Club meeting at the Swiss Wheel restaurant featured a pro and con fluoridation presentation with Dr. Frank Bull of the State Board of Health speaking for and Mrs. Ted Rahberger speaking against. After adjournment, a Q and A included Mrs. M. J. Gonstead. The Monroe basketball team was introduced, and a report on a coming Lions bowling tournament at Two Rivers was given by Dr. John H. Usher.

Col Robert R. McCormick editor of the Chicago Tribune, age 74, has taken a turn for the worse. His physician Dr Theodore R Van Dellen issued a bulletin stating the colonel’s condition is serious after months of failing health.
Cordell Hull 83, former secretary of state, remains hospitalized at Bethesda Naval hospital after a Saturday stroke. doctors said he appears to have made additional slight improvement as he fights the illness turning hopeful for his recovery.
Exchange at atomic information and materials with three or four countries noted by Prime Minister Nehru in Parliament. He clarified that Russia is not among the countries involved. Focused statement emphasizes selective international cooperation and excludes Moscow.
Secretary of State Dulles told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that a top level meeting with Russia is months away. He urged speedy ratification of German treaties to create conditions for European problems, noting even a lower level conference may precede any heads of state talks.

Panama's impeached President Jose Ramon Guizado was convicted as an accessory in the assassination of his predecessor Jose Antonio Remon. He received six years and eight months in prison, was stripped of the presidency, and banned from public office for the term. The verdict, by a 45-8 vote in a secret session, followed an eight day trial amid a charged political defense.
Ivanhoe Lodge Knight of Pythias met for the last time in KP hall with 30 members as arrangements begin to move to IOOF hall due to remodeling of the bank building. The local KP group, organized Feb 19 1883, has met in KP hall for 54 years. The post honored long-serving members. John A. Hinsey of Milwaukee sponsored the uniform rank division and donated a silk banner worth over 1800.
In New York Henry W The Dutchman Grunewald and Daniel A Bolich former assistant commissioner of internal revenue were convicted by a federal jury of a 160000 tax fix bribery conspiracy. Manhattan tax attorney Max Halperin was also convicted. two co defendants were acquitted. The verdict followed a seven week trial with sentencing set for Friday.
John T. Moar 87 retired builder and contractor a lifelong Brodhead resident died yesterday in Coplien nursing home after a brief illness. Born Oct 4 1867 in Sylvester Township he worked as carpenter and contractor in Brodhead for 62 years. He married Cora Newcomer Oct 24 1889 and they lived in Brodhead except for a few years in Albany. They observed their 65th wedding anniversary last year. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Knights of Pythias. Surviving are his wife a daughter Mrs Arthur Hooker of Aurora Ill two sons LaVerne of Dundee Ill and Kenneth of Aurora a granddaughter and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 pm at Newcomer funeral home with Rev J C Robertson officiating burial in Greenwood cemetery Brodhead. Friends may call tonight.
Information on polio immunization with the Salk vaccine will be shared with mothers of first and second graders at two Monroe gatherings tomorrow. Sessions are 10 a.m. in East school auditorium and 2 p.m. in South school, arranged by city nurse Miss June Grammes. Free vaccine will be offered to eligible children if approved at the April 12 Ann Arbor meeting. results from last year’s trials will be announced there.
Seven teenagers were injured when a car traveling at over 100 mph hit a dip on Highway 11, skidded 500 feet, and overturned near a creek two miles east of Brodhead. Six were taken to St. Clare hospital with severe injuries. one was treated and sent home. Drivers and passengers from Brodhead, Orfordville, and Monroe. Local officials called for a fullRock County investigation into the crash.
