Anchorage reels from a massive earthquake at 5 36 p m to 9 p m local time. Buildings collapse, power fails, and fires challenge rescuers as Alaska faces possible hundreds of deaths and extensive damage across coastal towns.

Wisconsin Forestry Tax Hike on Ballot

Wisconsin voters consider amending Section 10 of Article 8 to raise the state forestry tax from 2 tenths to one quarter of a mill. The measure does not force an immediate levy increase. the Legislature would set any rise. The present $4 million income funds fire protection nurseries research and forest development with payments to towns and landowners.

County May Form Development Unit For Green County

County Board committees plan a new resource and development committee for Green County. A meeting is set for Friday, April 3 at 6 30 p m in the Swiss Wheel. Ray L Beckman, chairman, says the group will include board members and local business industry and recreation leaders. Topics include a county sponsored resource brochure and projects to boost tourism and industry.

Monroe introduces the Monroe Cigar Co Inc to revive the Shoe Peg cigar with 60 day start, five local partners and 80 year old cigarmaker George F Koepp returning from retirement to manage operations. Walter J Bober named president plans to produce 10000 handmade cigars weekly in a trailer or new building nearby.

Tidal Waves Hit Louisiana Texas Coasts

A 5 to 6 foot tidal wave rolled along the Louisiana and Texas coasts Friday night. No deaths or serious injuries were reported and property damage appeared light. Coast Guard and Weather Bureau connections to the Alaskan quake were noted but sole inland impact was dramatic with docks and boats bobbing and ramps damaged along the Amite River near Baton Rouge and Port Arthur observers reporting varying wave heights.

Faubus Orders Hot Springs Casinos Shut After Gov Warns

Police Chief John Ermey ordered the illegal multimillion dollar gambling operations in Hot Springs to close tonight following a Friday night warning from Governor Orval Faubus that state troopers would act if closures did not occur. The U S Justice Department had investigated gambling in the resort city weeks earlier and labeled it the nation’s largest illegal operation. A House resolution condemning gambling preceded Faubus action.

Mr and Mrs Clement Esch and Mr and Mrs Herbert La Buch of Monroe seek news about their son David Esch who was in Seattle at noon yesterday en route to Fairbanks Alaska. He attends the University of Illinois and planned Easter with Paula La Buch teaching at Lathrop High School Fairbanks. Ann Goodmiller daughter of Mr and Mrs Alan Goodmill er also in Fairbanks teaching Ft Wainwright school. Forshaug relative Jens H in Fairbanks relocation officer with the US Bureau of Indian Affairs has over 25 years in Alaska.

Monroe police investigate the theft of a car from the Johnson-Eraser Pontiac lot at 602 Highway 11 West. The theft occurred last night and the abandoned vehicle was found in the 600 block of 11th Street.

Alaskan quake caused Pacific flood and fires across coast

Waves from the Alaska earthquake battered Pacific shorelines from Canada to California and Hawaii. In Oregon a family at Beverly Beach is damaged with a drowning and missing. In Crescent City several drowned and central business district wrecked. Texas Texaco and Union 76 tanks exploded while fires spread. Hawaii reports tidal surges with minor Maui flooding and a 10 foot surge at Santa Catalina Island. Nuclear alert sounded for the islands.
