AP reports early airport checks show few controller absences despite initial indications from PATCO public affairs officer Robert C. Stagill of a widespread walkout. Overall conditions at major airports appeared normal with no large scale disruption.
Ron Ridenhour, 23, a California student, was subpoenaed to Washington to testify about drug use by U S troops in Vietnam following a former Army sergeant’s testimony that soldiers who participated in the My Lai operation smoked marijuana the night before the alleged massacre. James W Teague, a former Army psychiatrist, also appeared, citing a journal article on marijuana use causing mental disturbances among some veterans.
John W. O’Brien, general vice president of the AFL-CIO Sheet Metal Workers International Association, urged Congress to reject a binding settlement. He warned the railroad proposal could threaten workers’ jobs by broadening a work rule interpretation and accused leaders of deception.
The Dominican government agreed to release 20 prisoners to secure the release of U S air attache Lt Col Donald J Crowley who is believed to be held by kidnappers led by Brig Gen Rafael Guzman Acosta. The captors likely plan to release Crowley at a chosen embassy.
New York Times reports the Nixon administration aims to reduce U S ground troops in South Vietnam by more than half over the next 15 months. The plan would have full ground combat responsibility transferred to South Vietnamese forces in that period.
The FTC and local officials join forces in Chicago to combat fraud and deception. FTC Chairman Caspar Weinberger calls the integrated federal state and local effort a model for other cities and outlines advisor panels with local officials and businessmen to guide the field offices.
Tel Aviv reports four Egyptian MIG21s shot down in dogfights over the Suez Canal area marking the biggest Israeli success in over six months of aerial combat. Cairo says 16 planes from each side fought, one Israeli jet down and another damaged, with all Egyptian planes returning safely. Israel counters that all its aircraft returned undamaged.
Whitewater State University said the investigation of a sorority house raid will continue after reports that two or three additional students may be involved. Two Chicago teens, Michael R. Conlish and Edward M. Fitzgerald, both 18, pleaded innocent to criminal trespass in Walworth County Court with July 2 trials.
