Milwaukee officials report strong group and church support for a used can recycling plan but private citizens remain largely apathetic as Continental Can Co in Glendale reports under one ton collected since the March 6 launch.
Bob Hahlen and Wilbur Dehmer named regular delegates to the Conservation Congress. Roger Krueger and Norbert Pustina named alternates as hearings discuss trout bag limits setline tending rules and northern pike regulations across Green and surrounding counties. A statewide report on hunting regulations will be published tomorrow.
Arthur J. Wedig of Route 2 Cuba City was named outstanding conservation farmer of the year at the 11th annual Lafayette County Soil and Water Conservation District awards in Darlington. Albin Beebe of Hazel Green received a conservation service citation. Junior conservationists named were Allen Abraham Darlington Steve Black Shullsburg Dwayne Fox South Wayne John Nelson Argyle and Steve Steinhoff Belmont. Wedig plans to run a 250 head dairy herd on 250 acres six miles south of Belmont with milk sold from the NFC Dickeyville station. Richard Akeley the new state conservationist spoke on federal cutbacks to the SCS and potential staff reductions in Wisconsin.
Monroe Board of Education discussed a summer program with reading as priority. Programs include reading music driver education typing speech correction and band with about 450 pupils total across grades K to 12. Estimated cost 6000 with state reimbursement 1650 for driver education.
St Clare Hospital said it is not involved in the FDA action to withdraw intravenous fluids. The FDA ordered two Madison hospitals to stop using Abbott Laboratories products linked to a blood infection outbreak causing nine deaths. St Clare uses Baxter fluids and had no connection to the recall.
Washington AP reports wavering senators face last minute White House effort as Nixon plans calls before today's crucial Senate vote on the 1,800 mph SST. Proponents tout prestige and jobs, while opponents warn ecological and health risks. The House previously cut SST funding, but a $7.2 billion transportation bill is back in play.
Funeral planned for Sgt. Paul Monson 21 at West Wiota Lutheran Church near Gratiot March 25 with full military rites. Monson, from Wiota, born December 2 1949, served with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam and died March 16 in a military hospital. Survived by parents four brothers sister and grandmother. friends may call Sharer Funeral Home in Darlington.
Saigon announced the southern Laos operation against the Ho Chi Minh trail ended with North Vietnamese tanks pursuing to the border. U.S. aircraft knocked out six tanks while 89 helicopters were lost. South Vietnamese casualties numbered 1,146 dead, 245 missing, and 4,325 wounded, with 15 percent of their invading force killed.
Conrad Stauffacher longtime Green County farmer dies at 74 in St. Clare Hospital after a long illness. He and a late brother pioneered strip and contour farming on a 600 acre Monticello area farm near New Glarus Woods State Park. Survived by Emma, a daughter Dorothy Ann Halverson, sister J A Freitag, brother Dick, and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements set for March 27 with Frederick S Voegels in charge.
Local officials, students, and the Monroe Common Council are promoting recycling after tours of a Madison center run by Coca Cola. The plant sorts, crushes, and ships cans and glass, paying five cents per pound for certain bottles and handling six tons of cans and 15 tons of glass weekly.
