President Truman assured Americans they need fear no disclosure of confidential information as the 1950 census begins April 1. He pledged penalties for officials who reveal answers and stated the data will not be used for taxation, law enforcement, or military purposes.
Michael Shapiro and his wife Rae were fingerprinted and posted $10,000 bonds each after a preliminary hearing before U S Commissioner Floyd Jenkins. Authorities say income tax evasion may exceed $1 000 000 with alleged misrepresentation of Rae Shapiro’s 1943 and 1944 returns totaling 11 168 for both years. U S Attorney Cronin noted the charges cover only part of the couple’s operations.
Belleville man King faces a hunting mishap charge after allegedly wounding Marlene Strand during a deer season. He appeared before Court Commissioner John P. Miller in Manston and was released on $1,000 bond. King will appear in circuit court in April in Manston.

In a Rock home fire, Neil Scott and his wife rescued six children. The parents woke to cries at about 2 a.m. and spent minutes passing each child to safety from the first to second floors before Scott was himself pulled from the blaze by relatives and fire crews.

Donald McDowell, department of agriculture director, said today McDowell said controls, applied earlier this month because of the coal shortage, might come off. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Leverton and Mrs. Lula Pansing, both of Warren, and three sons, George and John, both of Warren, and Nicholas of Sabon.
Washington reports say diplomat Philip C. Jessup drafts a fighting reply as Senator McCarthy accuses the State Department of communist influence. Jessup, returning from the far east, is set to testify Monday before the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee and may broaden defense of the department against charges.

Michael Zurich, manager of a Milwaukee battery firm, overpowered one burglar in a after-hours break in. The other two fled, and police later arrested two brothers at their homes after the captured assailant implicated them.

Charles Hawkinson age 74 longtime Gratiot businessman died yesterday at a Janesville convalescent home. Born April 28, 1875, in Gratiot, he operated a grain lumber and fuel business. married 1904 to Christian Gille. Survived by daughter Mrs Walter Lindemann of Janesville and three grandchildren. Services Monday at Ayers Sonnerholm Funeral Home with burial in Gratiot cemetery.
Canton report says top United Mine Workers officials stayed silent on a claim that John L. Lewis ordered miners to ignore a federal end strike order. Lloyd Sidener, expelled local 7445 president, alleged Lewis instructed 380,000 miners to resume work, via Bernard Beasley, with details of whistle signals and contract requirements. Beasley denied the charge and officials declined comment.
Weatherman forecasts continued winter conditions with snow and cold in the area. The Chicago weather bureau indicates a storm moving from the southern plains toward the Great Lakes bringing heavy snow mixed with rain or sleet to Indiana and Illinois tonight or Sunday.

Lt. Col. A. E. Holberg announced after conferring with T. K. Jordan and state aeronautics officials that Camp McCoy meets all 15 basic requirements for a national air force academy. They discussed the site with La Crosse Black River Falls Tomah and Sparta representatives. The site is one of 300 locations under consideration.

After a March 10 engine room fire on the net tender Elder, 26 sailors fled in a lifeboat and rafts as explosions followed. The Piedmont later rescued 14 more crewmen aboard the Elder, while the remaining 14 stayed aboard to battle the blaze. All 40 crew were recovered. one officer described the ordeal and noted ammunition was jettisoned during the fire.
Edmond Kersten a 17 year old Campion High School Prairie du Chien student won the American Legion state oratorical contest in Stevens Point Friday. He defeated his brother George 14 Milwaukee and two other finalists. George finished third. Mike Hammond Appleton took second and James Yort Colfax was the other finalist.
Fairchild second in command of the U S air force died suddenly at 55 after a long career in service. He was stricken with a heart attack at his quarters at Fort Myer Virginia.
