Father Charged in Foster Parents Death and Kidnaping
An 18 year old, Melvin Polar, is charged with murder, attempted murder, and two counts of kidnapping in the fatal shooting of Harold W. Hohenstein and the injuries to Ruby Hohenstein. Two girls aged 16 and 17 were held hostage during the incident at the Washburn home. The case followed a call from the Rayburn home reporting the suspect’s threat with a .22 rifle before officers detained him and recovered the car. The Hohensteins were injured. Mrs. Hohenstein later treated at Marshfield. The Rayburn girls were returned home. In a separate drowning, 18 year old Michael Gargano of Chicago died at Delavan Lake after a break through ice incident on Sunday. companion Steve Bartosovik, 45, was rescued and hospitalized in satisfactory condition.

Police Chief Henry S. Hefty announced cages at the Monde incinerator and strict enforcement of the city dog at large ban. Dogs found off premises face fines or jail, with a $10 cash bond and court options. Owners must license and may claim dogs by paying pickup and boarding fees. A pending cat control measure may follow within 60 days.

Fire department fights vehicle fire on city square
Firemen were called at about 11 20 last night when a car driven by George Pul krabek caught fire on the south side of the square. One engine crew extinguished the blaze damaging the engine area. Fire Chief Josef Benkerti said a broken gas line likely fed the fire. Firemen returned at 11 40 p.m.
