Swiss Colony Fire Drives 1965 Losses High In Monroe
A year end fire report by Fire Chief Joseph Benkert attributes 90 percent of Monroe's 1965 fire losses to the Swiss Colony Fire that gutted the restaurant and Cheese and Gift Shop. Losses totaled about 124,500 with repairs and nearby property damage included. the Inn was gutted and work continued into 1966. The blaze began Nov 10 from fryer grease, smoke damaged adjacent buildings, and managers planned a larger dining room and bar in the Eugene Hotel basement. The incident was one of 43 city alarms and 22 rural alarms in 1965, with cyclone and tornado efforts taxing volunteer crews. fire department duties included water delivery, tree clearing, debris removal, and victim searches.

Area Highway Detour Near Benton Closes Bridge Route
A section of Highway 11 is closed east of Benton for bridge repairs, with traffic detoured between Highways 23 and 80 in Lafayette and Grant counties. The detour began yesterday and will last about two weeks. The bridge was damaged Monday by an oversize load. Traffic will reroute via Highways 23 81 and 80 and is not expected to cause major congestion.
