Madison Rep. John W. Byrnes of Green Bay filed today as a Republican presidential candidate and released a slate of 30 delegates pledged to him in the April 7 preferential primary. Byrnes will be the GOP's unopposed favorite son candidate. Three of Wisconsin’s six Republican congressmen were named delegates: Reps. Melvin Laird of Marshfield, Henry Schadeberg of Burlington, and Byrnes.

Cramblett Couple Found Dead In Car West Of Janesville
Milwaukee couple Mr and Mrs James Cramblett were found dead in their snow covered car four miles west of Janesville on Highway 11. Carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause. The pair were en route to Brodhead and Albany to visit relatives and were married last July. The woman formerly Patricia Ann Schwartzlow attended Judo High and Central Technical Airlines training. Both were connected to Milwaukee and Beloit based firms earlier.

Monroe insurance man critically hurt in Dane County crash
Joe E. Miller, 39, a Monroe insurance man and former Monroe parks director, was listed in fair condition in the ICU at Madison’s Madison Hospital after a car struck an Illinois Central freight train on the McKee road crossing south of Madison. He suffered a cerebral concussion a severe fracture of the right upper thigh severe lacerations of the right hand and significant blood loss. Authorities said there was marked improvement overnight and Miller planned surgery on the fractured thigh once strength allowed. He reported to his wife Helen that he did not see the train approaching after cresting a hill. The incident occurred yesterday around 1 p m as his 1961 model car hit the first of two diesel engines. the train continued under the second engine. Dane Traffic Policeman Gerald Booth transported Miller to the hospital. The crossing warning signal was operating. Miller was conscious and remained in the ICU with no visitors allowed for at least a week. The report also notes cheese quotations at the Green Bay state board were unavailable at presstime.

A 78 year old retired cheese maker and farmer Fred Wieland died at 1 50 am in St Clare hospital He hoped to start a new cheese factory He won the Governor's Sweepstakes Award at the Wisconsin State Fair in 1958 and 1959 for brick cheese The brick cheese continues to be made at the Pleasant Hill factory near Dodgeville now run by two of his six sons He retired last April and visited Switzerland last summer He immigrated in 1916 from Switzerland and worked in several Wisconsin cheese factories before farming Surviving are five daughters and six sons plus three steps and many grandchildren Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 pm at the Newcomer funeral home Burial will be at Highland cemetery in Montecello.

Tanker Bunker Hill Crew Missing After Sinking Near Whidbey Island
An empty tanker exploded and sank 15 miles from its destination off Whidbey Island in Puget Sound. Coast Guard boats rescued 26 survivors, leaving 18 of the 44 crew unaccounted for. Survivors, badly burned and cut, were taken to hospitals on Whidbey Island.
