State To Assist In Swiss Checkup

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture will help the Swiss cheese industry study how Finnish imports affect the domestic market and will conduct an inquiry of its own. G. Fred Galli, head of the Wisconsin Swiss and Limburger Cheese Producers Association, reported after meetings in Washington with Rep. Henry C. Schadeberg and staff and an appointment with Walter Roy of the Bureau of Customs. He also spoke with Rep. Vernon Thomson and the Finnish embassy cultural attaché. Galli's daughter Carol, a Washington government employee, joined him at the International airport where they were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schultz of Elkhorn. Schultz, former Monroe High School graduates with Miss Galli, is moving to Washington to manage a new branch factory for A. O. Smith Corp.

Fire at Zimmerman Farm prompts Monroe fire crew call

Monroe firemen were dispatched to the Wilbur Zimmerman farm on Highway 81 near the Junction House at 1 35 this afternoon. The house filled with smoke but no fire was seen. No further details were available.

Stocks Cut Losses as Mart Remains Down

NEW YORK The stock market cut its losses in moderately active trading late this afternoon but remained irregularly lower. Trading was moderately active with volume around 4.9 million shares versus 9.28 million on Wednesday. Most key stocks moved within fractions to a point. gains and losses were narrow as the market edged from an early decline after a three day push to record highs. The selling tapered later and there was some improvement.

MacArthur to Undergo Exploratory Operation

General Douglas MacArthur, age 84, has obstructive jaundice of unknown origin and will have exploratory abdominal surgery Friday morning at Walter Reed Army Hospital to determine the cause. Diagnostic tests have been completed and show the condition.

Four major Wisconsin GOP candidates spoke at Green County Republican caucus in the Courthouse amid a snow storm. Sheriff W J Deiminger to seek re election here

Sheriff W J Deiminger announced at the county Republican caucus at the Courthouse that he will run again on the Fall ballot. He is midway through his second term and has a long career in law enforcement including undersheriff from 1943 to 1954, deputy coroner from 1946, and county coroner since 1958. He also commanded Co K when the National Guard unit organized in 1947 and served 24 years with the Fire Department.

Blizzard Paralyzes Roads Then Eases in Monroe Area

A savage blizzard swept through the Monroe region causing heavy snow, rain, and sleet with 7 inches locally and up to 12 inches east of town. By noon roads opened, schools planned to resume, and only minor outages reported. County crews plowed main arteries, with drifting concentrated on FF and 1181. Attendance dropped in Monroe high schools and several rural schools remained closed.
