Tokyo radio reported American forces breached two thirds of Iwo Jima with Marines advancing on the Ryukyu front as a new Philippine invasion was launched on Palawan. Tokyo confirmed a cabinet resignation in Japan and Manila reopened to U.S. shipping as two submarines were lost.
President Roosevelt urged Congress to back world peace efforts from Yalta through Dumbarton Oaks and future treaties. He pressed for nonpartisan support for unconditional surrender of Germany and Japan, arguing peace requires active American leadership and collaboration with allies.
Pvt. William Gabriel 18, son of Hiram B. Gabriel and nephew of Mrs. T L Durner, Evansville, died at the Evansville Police Station after being questioned about a furlough. He admitted AWOL, then was shot in a rest room after a brief visit to a drink, as authorities notified Truaxfield Madison Georgia.
German raiders cross the Senio river south of the Russi Lugo road driving Eighth Army troops from positions. Allied counter attacks recaptured several prisoners, but some German forces remained on the east bank. Two additional enemy patrols crossed the Senio south of the Faenza Bologna highway at night and attacked Eighth Army counts but were driven back.

Paris reports the U S Ninth Army seized the citadel of Muenchen Gladbach and breached defenses near Trier and Cologne as First Army forces pushed toward Cologne. Northward, Ninth Army near Rheydt and Grevenbroich. Third Army continues advances as Germans report thwarted crossings.
President Roosevelt briefs Congress on the Stalin and Churchill meeting as the Senate moves to confirm Henry A. Wallace as commerce secretary. Most opposition has faded with a predicted 10 to 20 vote margin, while separate bills on peacetime training and manpower face renewed debate after the Wallace decision.
Gilert C. Engle, 75, and son Fred of Mello Ice Cream Oshkosh were given 30 day federal terms and fined 2000 and 1000 dollars after pleading guilty to producing ice cream beyond War Food Administration quotas. They sold 67095 gallons on Feb 1 with 35245 gallons over quota to Walgreen stores in Oshkosh and Milwaukee.
