Reluctance Delay Marked History of Control Program

In 1950 Bernard Baruch warned of inflation unless price and wage controls were used. Congress granted power, but Truman delayed setting them up until after elections. By 1951 controls began, prices rose 4.1 percent in 18 months. The House and Senate disputed renewal, with wage controls likely remaining. The outcome hinges on a compromise between houses and a potential veto. The political fight shapes how long controls survive and if prices spike thereafter.
