Barbara Baugh Wins Wisconsin Miss Pageant Title

Barbara Baugh, 20, of Brookfield, was named Miss Wisconsin and will compete for Miss America in Atlantic City this September. The Augustana College student earned a $1,000 scholarship and a $6,000 wardrobe, including a $1,000 mink, and an all expenses paid trip to Atlantic City.

Ramp vandalism probe after Friday night burglary

Monroe police investigate vandalism at a parking ramp on Friday night June 23. Officers report glass windows covering fire extinguishers were shattered and two extinguishers were stolen, prompting further inquiry into the incident.

Queen Marcia Riley Crowned Dairy Day Archery Queen

Mrs. Marcia Riley of rural Darlington won the women’s freestyle at the Marshall Bluff Dairy Day Shoot near Monticello. She was named queen of the Southwestern Wisconsin Field Archery League and will compete for state honors August 19 and 20 in Black River Falls. Riley’s son Zane has won state youth titles. 127 shooters participated.

It Was Korea All Over Again in Dak To Battle

Wisconsin platoon sergeant of the 173rd Airborne Brigade recalls the Dak To fight with 800 North Vietnamese regulars. The 130 man unit suffered 80 dead and 34 wounded after a fierce jungle clash west of the Central Highlands. Sergeant Leon P. Hostak, 37, from Kewaunee, Wisconsin, was wounded thrice.

Monroe Turners Win Midwest Festival Men Team First

The Monroe Turners claim first in the Midwest Festival held in Milwaukee for the men with the host club placing second and Cleveland third. Women’s results see Monroe ladies finish second by one point behind Milwaukee. Individual winners include Nan cy Krattiger and Steve Mitchell with multiple top finishes in apparatus and track events.

Thunderstorms Kill At Least 22 Across Northwestern Europe

Violent storms raked northwestern Europe over the weekend, leaving at least 22 dead and about 200 injured. A tornado hit villages near Douai France causing seven deaths and about 110 injuries, while six others died and 17 were hurt in the Netherlands. Weather officials linked the events as the same tornado system.

Auto Mishaps Reported Across Green County Area

Deputies investigated five Saturday incidents in Green County and area towns. A Monticello driver lost control near New Glarus, another collision occurred at The Mansion entrance, and a Monroe road crash damaged a truck and a car. A Toledo driver crashed through a barbed wire fence ten miles northwest of Monroe early Saturday.

Recreation Dances Attract 257 Youths To Center

The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department sponsored two summer teen dances at the Monroe Community Center drawing 257 youths. A junior high event on Thursday with 97 attendees featured Night Riders from the area. Friday’s high school dance drew 160 with music by the Ruins from Cassville. Next junior high dance is July 20 and next high school dance is July 21, both at the Community Center with different bands.

Students From Norway Arrive For Lions Exchange

The Lions Clubs of Monroe and Blanchardville sponsor three Norwegian youths under the Youth Exchange Program. Kristín Tonga and Ingun Dina Ulstein, two girls ages 17 and 18, come from Kolbotn and Lierbyen. Kare Karterude, 19, will stay with three Monroe area hosts, and arrivals are set for July 3 at O'Hare Field.

Day Camp Second Session Opens For Girl Scouts
